Greetings

To make a long story short, I would define myself as advanced-amateur/semi-pro photographer, and as of this moment (as well as in forseeable future) I am unable to afford a real Mac, so i've been thorned by option to use OS X on my PC.

I've tried it already, found that 99% of the things works on my pc out of the box, was using iAtkos 5, the only thing not working was mic, but from what i've heared any usb mic solves that issue, besides i will be buying acer aspire one soon as i need a small laptop to store photos when i'm shooting somewhere remote for more then a day or two so i can use that thingie @ home for skype and voice chat needs.

As i'm in need of new hard drive, i'll soon buy 640bg WD drive and 2 more GB ram, i'm thinking of while doing that to switch main PC to OSX, or some 64 bit windows (vista or xp? don't know yet).

What i'll be using it mainly for are two applications

Photoshop & Photoshop Lightroom

Conf:

Asus P5B Motherboard

2gb DDR2 Kingston 800mhz kingston ram (together with new HD i'll buy additional 2gb)

Core2Duo 2.21ghz (E4500)

ATi Radeon HD2600Pro (Pci-E)

22" wide monitor

Questions:

While i was testing iAtkos on my old hard drive for testing (some, maxtor 40gb IDE) i found out that startup time of some applications is not that great, overall system was stable and everything worked nicely, but i installed Photoshop CS and i coudn't get away from the feel that UI is not as resposnive as in WinXP.

I was using vanilla kernel, and somewhere along the lines on this forum i read that using voodoo gives noticable performance increase? is that true or?

:: Should i use vanilla kernel or Voodoo one? ::

:: When(and if) I install 10.5.5 should i bother installing 10.5.6 update, or not attempt to fix what's not broken and stay with 10.5.5? ::

:: And bottom line.. is it all WORTH IT?, would you switch if you were me ? ::

There are many reasons why i like Os X over windows and why i'm considering switching for example

No need for antivirus which slugs your comp

After using OS X for 2 days i got back to windows and asked myself "how can i go on without expoze?", it is HANDY.

I just like the design and philosphy behind the os.

Any tip or what/ever, throw it at me, i can use all the info i get.

Tnx!!

Photoshop CS is running on Intel machines only in Rosetta Layer, which is a Software Emulation

to get Photoshop working like hell, you need to upgrade at least to CS3, which runs then nativly.

to be on the sure side ( for a working machine, just add a second HD or have one in spare) and clone the whole system including bootloader, system and your favorite apps ( i do it that way))

Hi,

I'm more or less like you, an amateur/semi-pro photographer.

And I'm still wondering if I really switch all my system to OSX (I haven't deleted Windows partition yet). It would be a pity if I change all my system and then I start to have problems (kernel panics, etc.) and I cannot work properly.

Until now I'm using PS CS3 and Lightroom without problem. The only thing is that I think I will have to buy a bigger screen. Right now I have a 19" monitor and Lightroom seems very crowded. I think in Windows it was different, the menus smaller someway.

Appart from that, what I found wonderful in OSX is that the whole system is very confortable. You have exposé and also spaces, it's very handy.

My advice is to have booth systems for a period of time. Just in case you have problems in OSX. I have 3 partitions, 1 for OSX, 1 for XP and the third one for the fotos and Lightroom database. This way my photos are always accessible, from whatever OS.

Good luck!

My answers are:

  • I think well-configured hackintoshes are almost identical to real Macs. The most problematic area, if there is any, is audio not video. I am using CS3 and Aperture, and couldn't find any problem.
  • Once you have a stable installation of v10.5.5, there is no reason not to try v10.5.6. If you get used to the native installation method, it is really easy to maintain with and update to the most recent version of Mac OS X.
  • I say yes. First, it is extremely worth to switch to Mac OS X. Second, it is worth to make a hackintosh if you are short of money.
