I do currently run Snow Leopard with a ASUS Maxiumus II Formula... And everything seems to work, at least everything I need...

Here are the files I have used :

http://rapidshare.com/files/277513377/Maxi...ormula.zip.html

or

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7V9CIWWZ

Don't forget to use Kext Helper to install and Kext Utility to rebuild Extensions.mkext ! :)

-------------------------------

For the installation I suggest you to wait until they make a boot-132 for Snow Leopard... Personally I have installed Mac OS 10.5.7 (iATKOS v7 release) then I have installed Snow Leopard from it...

So here what to do:

1- Install the fixed BIOS for the Maximus II Formula (version 1901) (Look here: http://www.osxcores.site50.net/product-1.htm)

2-Boot the iATKOS v7 DVD then :

a ) Create 2 partitions (one for 10.5 and one for 10.6) using GUID Partition Table (WARNING: Changing from MBR to GUID will erase all data on your disk)

b ) Install Mac OS Leopard on the first partition

3- Install Chameleon 2 RC3 on the first partition (with 10.5) then on the second partition (with 10.6)

4- Install Snow Leopard (Retail version) on the partition reserved for it from System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg (On your Mac OS Install disk)... Don't install Rosetta, Printers drivers and languages support, etc if you don't need them...

5- Patch DSDT using DSDT Patcher GUI

6- Install manually the kext you need on /System/Library/Extensions/

7- Delete /Extra/Extensions.mkext

8- Boot using -v -f

An thats it!

You may need other kexts... If you need help or more detailed instructions just ask me.! ;-)

Hi Gounah,

I'm a bit of a OsX virgin so to speak and started my research into getting into this, but freaked when all the guides were pretty much all talking of Gigabyte boards being the best option. Thank goodness there is someone with a Maximus II Formula running OSX on their rig. A couple of questions which I have might be best answered by you if you don't mind; firstly I'm running my rig with these specs:

  • Q9550 @ 3.8GHz (on air)
  • Asus Maximus II Formula (on 1307 Bios but will upgrade to latest 2202)
  • 8GB GSkill PC2 8800 Pi
  • Nvidia GTX260 896MB

I'm pretty lost with the whole booting into OSX at the moment, I tried to get the iPC 10.5.6 up and running but there seemed to be a point where I got to the -v -f stage of things to compile the boot loader and things went pear shaped. Still pretty confused on the various kexts and injectors and other thing that people are talking about but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

OK... Tomorrow, I will write you a detailed guide on how to run Mac OS Leopard and Snow Leopard on your computer...

For now, what I suggest you to do is downloading iATKOS v7 and buying a genuine DVD of Snow Leopard (it's only 35$CAD and you won't have to download it)... I also suggest you to download PC Wizard (HERE) to have a detailed view of your computer specifications... It's important to know what's inside your computer before installing Mac OS on it...

Also... I suggest you to backup all your important data on another HDD/CD/DVD/SD Card... The install of Mac OS will erase your data on your HDD... But its worth it!!! ;)

Thank you so much,

I'll get onto that right away. I've got a HDD set aside especially for the install of OSX. Will the overclock on the MIIF be an issue...?

Not for me.... I'm running my E8400 @ 3,16GHz. ;)

Hi Gounah,

Got iATKOS v7 downloaded and the Snow Leopard should arrive tomorrow. I ran some stability tests again on the Q9550 OC @ 3.8GHz on the new 2202 BIOS for the MIIF and it seems stable after 10 loops of Linpack.....and .....errrrr....2 hours of BF2 (a very scientific test IMHO.. :wallbash: ). I'll eagerly await your guide, and thank you for going to all this trouble.

All you need to install Mac OS Leopard is in this file (Guide and Drivers)... I will do the rest of the tutorial, for Snow Leopard tomorrow... Now I need some beer, friends and maybe pizza...

You should be OK to install Leopard tonight if you already have iATKOS v7...

Here the link to the file :

Have a good night! :)

Edit: I see that I have made a mistake... forget about the first step "Download my Zip file HERE".... I first had the idea to do the tutorial as a forum post then I changed of idea and put it in a .doc file... And also, the Bios is already in the zip file... but maybe it more safe to download it directly from the website....

Hi Gounah,

Awesome and very simple tutorial you gave.....Thank you, thank you, thank you.. it all works just as you said!!!!!!!!. :(:D:D:D:D:D:D I now keep going over the steps in your tutorial and wondering why all the others tutorials on the web seem so complicated in comparison. I owe you a case of beer (you can hold me to that.....I'll be moving to NY at the beginning of 2010).

Just going to check a couple of things with you....is it OK to do the updates on the web...? I have-not even connected to the web with it but I thought I might as well ask before doing anything stupid. Secondly as far as running something like FCP is concerened is there a correct way to partition and seperate the OS and applications on OSX ? In Vista I run a 100GB partition for the OS and 20GB for the Applications and leave a 100GB as a scratch disk which I can use as the temp for all the applications and if need be assign the Vista page file to as well, the rest of the primary disk I use for Data.

The dual booting would be great if I could boot OSX from a separate physical HDD but I can live with swapping out the SATA cables when I want to swap to a different OS. Thank you again for sharing the info and writing the tutorial (really needs to be made into a sticky...its brilliant..!!!) and I eagerly await the Snow Leopard tutorial.

It is OK to do SOME updates... Little updates like iTunes, QuickTime, Java, etc. are OK to install.... But not the "major" updates like the Mac OS X 10.5.8 update... After updating from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8, some OSx86 drivers will be replaced... And this could cause the system not to boot...

About the partitioning, I think there is no problem running an application from a separate partition... I never had problems doing this under Mac OS...

Personally I have two 1TB HDD (Seagate Baracuda 7200RPM 32MB) and I divided both of them in four partitions...

HDD 1 {This hard-drive is for all OS... Its not rare that I have to reformat it because I mess with OS... But all the data is safe under the second hard-drive}

- Vista (250GB)

- Leopard (250GB)

- Snow Leopard (250GB)

- Ubuntu (250GB) {I have reserved it for Ubuntu but still never installed it}

HDD 2

- Alpha (215GB) {I use it for movies, pictures, music, ebooks, etc}

- Beta (215GB) {I use it for Application Installers (for Mac OS and Windows), for CD/DVD images (.iso .dmg) and for drivers backup}

- Gamma (215GB) {I use it entirely for games... installers, saves, updates, etc...}

- Delta (355GB) {Yeah, "D" for "Dump"... Thing that I may need someday but that I don't wan't to see... I think I will use this drive for Time Machine...}

About the dual booting... Its not a necessity to swap the SATA cable... With Chameleon boot-loader you can select the booting partition... You can install the package named "Chameleon 2 RC3"... It's a GRAPHICAL boot-loader!!! So install it and give me news... If you want a Boot Camp theme for it just ask me, I have a good one...

I'm sorry, but didn't had the time to write the tutorial about Snow Leopard, but I will try to write it as soon as possible... I'm really occupied with my job lately! (I'm a Laboratory Technician in a pharmacy)

It would be great to take a beer in New York... I live in Quebec (yeah I usually speak French... This is why I don't write really well in English) so this could be a nice trip... I think its about 2h from where I live...

Bonjour Gounah,

(OK.... thats about as far as my French language skills go...forgive me for that) No problem at all about the Snow Leopard install tutorial.....I have more than enough to play with at the moment. I was wondering if you have found a solution to the sound in any way. I've been reading as much as I could about it on the forums, it seems to be the main stumbling block for most dektops, especially the ones with X-Fi cards. I was looking at the possibility of getting an older PCI sound card solution like the SB Audigy as I only need stereo out anyway.

I'll download Chameleon 2-RC3 now and give it a try, it might save me a few bumps on the head crawling around under my desk. I'm in Tokyo at the moment and I have only Asahi Super Dry as my local domestic beer, but I have fond memories of Canadian beers growing up in England....something to do with the fact there was alcohol in them compared with the stateside ones ( I never worked out the fascination for warm/room-temp. beer in England).

Silly question but I'll ask...with Chameleon 2-RC3 will I be able to load it up at the Darwin boot-loader phase from a USB or do I need to re-install Leopard..?

HI... I don't have a lot of time this morning because I'm going to work in less than an hour... But don't worry about the X-Fi audio... It works very well on my computer...

Have you tried to install AppleHDA.kext on the zip file? Just drag AppleHDA.kext on Kext Helper and audio is supposed to work after a restart... If it don't work, what I suggest you to do is to open Kext Utility and enter your password, then restart... And if it still don't work... verify that the good audio inputs/outputs are selected in System Preferences/Sound... I have tried the Digital Out and the Line Out/Line In and they are working well on my computer...

All the files needed to install Mac OS are on the zip file that I gave you...

Have fun! :D

Hi Gounah,

Let me go bash my head for a while :) ; I can't believe I was so stupid as not to check my system before reading all the forums and going from 'Kernel Panic' to 'General Mayhem' about the sound card. I'm afraid I went into herd mentality mode :bag: and didn't look at the sytem specs once booted into OSX to even see if the sound card was recognised. If you need an idiot guinea pig to ever see if the flow of your tutorials manage to defeat the more logically challenged amongst us (such as myself), I'll be there front and centre ready to volunteer.

I'm going to quietly crawl into the corner and see if I can get FCP-7, that's what I need OSX for mainly. I will be getting a 5D II to shoot video with and FCP seems to be the only realistic solution at the moment. I'll keep you informed and might beg you for help if things go pear shaped. Thank you so much for your help with this first OSX instillation that went so smoothly, and that I probably needed to panic about the sound to make myself feel that I wasn't dreaming. Hope you have a great day and I will stay tuned daily to this forum and your posts.

OK....one more stupid question (I can't help myself.. :D ), I was looking at the various methods for dual booting and I came across EasyBCD , which seems to be geared more towards the people using Vista as the primary OS. Is this something you consider an acceptable alternative to using Chameleon 2 RC3..? My primary concern is that my PC system is primarily set up to do photo-editing and archiving on my external RAID for Photoshop and Lightroom. My Vista system is vital and I've had problems with Adobe after a system crash previously about licence verification (my fault due to over-clocking experiments with a fully loaded Vista with apps onboard). Any advice is gratefully received and there is absolutely no urgency at all to this. My thanks again for all your help.

H.

LOL... Don't worry, I'm probably worst than you when its time to be focused...

I don't think that EasyBCD is a good bootloader for Mac OS... The reason why is that Mac OS need a "Mac EFI emulator" to run properly on a PC... Real mac don't have a "BIOS", they use an EFI... This is THE main limitation that Apple made to restrict Mac OS to real Mac... (Other restrictions are mac specific hardwares... like Mac graphic card instead of a standard graphic card) I don't know really well how EFI is working but if you want to read about it here is a link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Firmware_Interface ...

For now, I think there is only two bootloader that support PC_EFI (The PC version of Mac EFI)... Chameleon and Boot Think... I'm more familiar with Chameleon, but Boot Think seems also good.

If you use Vista as your main OS, this shouldn't be a problem... You can set Chameleon to boot Vista by default...

Also... I suggest you to take a look at the chameleon themes ! http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php?board=7.0

If you need help to install one of them, just ask me!

If you can't find any apps for Mac OS, take a look at SerialSeeker & Serial Box... This could help you to fully "try" applications for an undetermined time... Considering that you WILL buy them if you like them! ;)

Sorry, but I'll have to report my next tutorial... But I PROMISE that I WILL do it within the next days...

Hi Gounah,

This is a bit off topic about the iATKOS 10.5.7 install (which is working perfectly I might add :(:D:D as I listen to some music while I type in Firefox on it ), but I seem to having a problem with installing FCP 7. I've read as much as I could on the forums about FCP starting problems and narrowed it down to this thread:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1224663

I've got to loading just FCP 7 but when I try to open it, it crashes, though it tells me that OSX is stable and does not have to re-started. I've tried the 'Edit the NetworkInterfaces.plist ' as described in the link above but I still get the same problem. Any chance you had the same sort of issues or you know of an obvious solution..? I would have put this out in the forum as a new thread but since we have the same basic hardware I thought you might know a simple answer to this. My apologies for troubling you with this, and I promise to stop doing so ASAP.

Try to got to "Volumes/SnowLeopard/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration" and delete NetworkInterfaces.plist, then reboot... I had a problem of this kind with itunes... Network Ethernet connections are named "en2" and "en3" instead of "en0" and "en1"...

I have found the solution there : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1811 ...

You will probably have to open "System Preferences" -> "Network"-> [Location] , and create a new location to get the network connection back...

Hey Gounah ,

Seriously you are a saint  , I feel stupid ( as per normal :(:wallbash::wallbash: ). I knew it was the OS addressing the NIC issue that was causing me the problems, but my head was unable to get around the re-assign for the en(2) and en(3) issue. I wasn't aware that OSX (I'm still on 10.5.7 not Snow Leopard) was able to query new hardware on boot. I've proved again what an ideal candidate I would be for the "Idiot guinea pig" position.. :pyth: . I'm going to try it now....wish me luck, and thank you again for being so generous with your time and advice.

H.

Hi Gounah,

I'm petitioning for canonization for you right now....:pope::D:pope::thumbsup_anim::pope::thumbsup_anim: if all goes well you should officially be a saint by next week (errr....my apologies if you are a devout Catholic as I only mean this in jest). EVERYTHING WORKS...!!!!!!!!

I'm going to start testing now to see how processing my 5DII .MOV test files go. The offer of the beer is still on and I'll stay in touch. Thank you for being so patient with some of my stupid questions and being able to help so promptly with such precise answers and insight.

H.

Hi HarshaDS! I'm glad to see that I've been able to help you... I have done the Snow Leopard installtion guide as promised !

I wish that this one will be as good as the first one...

If you have any other questions I'll be there. :)

Don't be ashamed to do mistakes or to ask questions... I mainly learn what I know by doing LOTS of mistakes... I have followed OSx86 progression from the first release to the most recent... I began with a Pentium IV (1.4GHz, 1GB PC133 and GeForce FX5200)... This mean a lots of screwed installations... But now I'm glad to be able to share a little of this knowledge...

Hi Gounah,

My apologies for not getting back to you immediately but I was busy with some boring work..sadly that pays the bills. I've been trying not to bother you too much as you are the Sensei that got me a working OSX Leopard and I realise I was using up your time quite a lot. I have been reading up as much as I can on forums and asking a few questions about various things and have come up with some more questions...forgive me.

I see there are a few people that are saying that Snow Leopard 10.6 has some issues with FCS 3/FCP 7, as this is the primary reason that I want to use a Mac is there a reason to upgrade as yet to SL or should I stay on Leopard 10.5.7 for a while ? At the moment the original install you walked me through is very stable and I feel that the upgrade to SL might not be worth it for me yet (I have carefully archived your SL upgrade though for later use...thank you for taking the time to do it). My only concern now is the dual-booting, I went to the Chameleon site but to be honest the install process was quite confusing for me. I would happily use Chameleon but I am rather scared of it, added to that the "Using Chameleon 2RC" document was pretty terrifying since it assumes you know the various kekts needed for you specific set-up of hardware. A simple guide to get me to a point where I can choose Leopard 10.5.7 and Vista64 through the graphical interface would be very appreciated if you have the time. My ideal set-up would be to have 4 physical drives altogether :

  • 2 physical drives for Leopard.....

  1. (HDD 1) 300GB Velociraptor as my OSX an FCP install
  2. (HDD 2) 1TB WD Caviar BLACK for DATA

  • 2 physical drives for Vista64.......

  1. (HDD 3)Vista64 and Applications
  2. (HDD 4) 1TB WD Caviar BLACK for DATA

If you could help me with an idiot guinea-pig guide to getting Chameleon in a GUI to boot between these 2 OS's in this configuration I would be most grateful. I know it is asking a lot and there is no great rush to get this done. My thanks again for all the help you have given me and you might get a torrent of people asking you for help as I mentioned you on HERE..!!!

Hey Gounah,

Sorry for the last post but I sat down with a friend of mine who is far more competent than myself and he managed to get the dual boot working with Vista boot loader. He worked out what I was trying to do and managed to get me to boot from either OS in the post BIOS screen before the VISTA or OSX mbr/efi(Darwin) initiated. Its not as elegant as the Chameleon GUI interface but it allows me to have a slaved HDD's for DATA per OS. I can also unplug either OS and have the remaining one boot without any issues, the only thing I find weird but fun is the fact that OSX can grab files from the Vista drives though not the other way around. Forgive the crudeness of this email but I haven't slept for over 42hrs and I think I need to collapse on my bed.

Hi! Sorry for my absence... I was really occupied with my work lately. Also I have installed a second Radeon HD4890 in CrossFire... But I'm really a noob about this... Now I can't boot Mac OS if CrossFire is enabled... I will try to find a way to solve this problem... But I don't have a lot of time to play with this... For now CrossFire is not as good as I thought... Graphics are choppy, slower and have a LOT of artifacts!!!

If you need to access an HFS+ partition from windows, I suggest you to try MacDrive... This is what I'm using... And it work really well...

I'm glad to see that you have found a solution for your dual boot. If you need anything just ask me!

Hi Gounah,

Please don't apologize for anything, you have been very generous with your time and knowledge. My current set-up is working very stably and that is all thanks to you my friend.

I have a possible suggestion that might help with the CROSSFIRE situation. Within the BIOS there is a way to enable or disable a memory remap which I think allows for the VGA to use system RAM for buffer overflow, this might be allocating system RAM without it being necessary. If you disable that, it might get rid of the choppiness in video playback. I'm not 100% sure if that is the solution but it might be an avenue to investigate. Hope work doesn't get you too busy to stop you playing with the new CROSSFIRE set-up. Thank you again for all the help given to make my transition to OS-X so easy.

Hi Gounah, I'm sorry to disturb you but I'm totally a noob to installing a Mac Os on a pc. I'm encountering this problem when I try to follow each of your steps and I've also already read all your post in this topic. But I just don't understand what is happening... Ok, the problem is I boot from iATKOS v7 10.5.7 then I press F8 when it ask me to choose what volume to boot on, after F8, I key in -v and then enter, after loading a while it suddenly restart my PC. I've no idea why and how this happened. Hopefully somebody can help me solve this problem. If possible I hope Gounah, if you can please write me an installation guide on step by step based on my pc specs below. Your help is gratefully appreciated. Thank you very much.

My PC specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.8GHz overclocked @ 3.5GHz

Asus Maximus II Formula with latest 2302 Bios ROM updated

4GB DDR2-SDRAM

ATI Radeon HD4870 X2

WD 300GB Velociraptor

OH GOSH, pls help......
