using ATI Crossfire and new dual GPU cards

hey all,

I'm just wondering about getting a Crossfire (or SLI) setup working under OSX86. i checked the HCL for a few different versions of OS X but it doesn't look like there's much mention of anything setup in Crossfire. also with a newer card like the 4870X2, has anyone tried using one of these?

i built a new PC last week, and used a 2nd hand 8800GTS. but it looks like the card is toast so i've got to get something else... and trying to get a feel for which cards may be more compatible. or is it just a matter of the longer the cards are out, the more work will take place on making compatible drivers, finding a fix, etc?

another thing i noticed from looking at the HCL is that there's alot more Nvidia cards listed on there than ATI. would i be correct in saying that generally the Nvidia cards have better compatibility? or are there just that many more Nvidia cards out there than ATI?

cheers for any advice.

Crossfire and SLI right now isn't supported, and probably won't be under osx86. The 8 and 9 series from Nvidia has pretty good support, but the x and hd series from ATI both have good support too.(Besides the hd4xxx series.) Only thing is with the X series, is some work out of the box, some don't. I had to input my device ID and install natit.kext for support for my x1800. Where as with other series of video cards, the 8 and 9 series I believe have efi strings, where I'm not sure what cards do on ATI's side, but the x1900 and hd2600 do I think.

If you want best price for performance, I'd say go with an hd3870. They're under $100, and have 320 shaders, as well as 256-bit memory buffer.
