TOP EDIT:

It looks like this was the right call for me. I've only really been fully up and running for about an hour or so, so my stroy might change in the next day, but compared to my last OSX installation, this one was a breeze! Well, NO osx86 hackintosh is probably really a 'breeze' but overall, this one was much easier.

There were a series of issues with Kalyway 10.5.2 + Dell Inspiron 530. USB ports didn't work. Onboard audio was problematic even with a bunch of different 'solutions'. Onboard NIC didn't work, even when trying things that others had success with. iATKOS v5i had so much going for it right out of the box. Basically iATKOS + 2 audio kexts + 1 NIC kext + 1 ATI installer and I have a working machine.

Man, I'm really starting to think I'm going to jinx myself here. In any case, this will be similar to my last thread which covered my Kalyway install. There will probably be way too much detail, but when I started that thread I wanted to make sure that somebody who knew NOTHING about making this work could actually get it to work. Ironically, the iATKOS installation ended up being one that is much more newbie friendly. I have lots of notes, so I'll start at the beginning and then format a conclusion which I'll probably end up putting back up in this first post. Hopefully this helps somebody somewhere :)

  • Dell Inspiron 530 - $470 incl shipping and tax from Dell
    • Core 2 Quad Q6600
    • 2GB (upgraded, see below)
    • 250GB HD

    Added items:

[*]4GB Crucial RAM (for a system total of 6GB) - $19.99 after rebate from Frys

[*]Sapphire HD 2600 Pro - $34.99 from NewEgg

"SAPPHIRE 1014L Radeon HD 2600PRO 512MB(256MB on board) 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail"

[*]Firewire is Rosewill RC-502 1394a 3+1 ports NEC PCI Card - $13.99 from NewEgg

    "Rosewill RC-502 NEC 3+1 Port Firewire/1394a Low-Profile PCI Card (ULEAD 8.0 VS-SE + Cable Bundle) Model RC-502 - Retail"

Working Quad-core Hackintosh = about $550

  1. I disconnected my working Kalyway 10.5.3 hard drive
  2. I connected my 30Gig drive just for messing around with. It currently has a Kalyway 10.5.3 installation that I was trying new kexts and stuff on.
  3. I restarted my Dell and went into the BIOS to set the DVD Drive as a boot device, then use F12 to boot from it. Note, you'll also have to watch the next screen because you will still have to strike any key to boot from the DVD.
  4. Once it booted, you have to click to continue
  5. "Preparing Mac OSX Leopard Installation" comes up.
  6. Go to the top menu and to "Utilities"
  7. Start Disk Utilities
  8. I selected my 30 gig from the left column, clicked the 'erase' tab, changed format to "MAC OSX (Journaled)" and then gave it a name
  9. Click "erase"
  10. NOTE: I don't quite understand this process, but it never assigns the name I entered to either the disk OR the partition (aka "volume") so I THEN select the "Volume" from the left hand column, and go through the process again and it will name the volume whatever I put in. OR just skip the first part and erase the volume if the drive is otherwise ready. In my case, the drive was already prepared as MBR.
  11. Exit disk utilities
  12. Click "continue"
  13. Click "agree"
  14. Select the drive for installation
  15. Click "continue"
  16. CLICK THE "CUSTOMIZE BUTTON"!!!! This is vital so don't miss it! Here is where you customize your installation.
  17. My installation options were based off of the other 530 thread here, but with some small changes. Most of these things are default options anyway.
    • Main System (default)
    • PC EFI V9 (default) NOTE: Something I don't understand here is why, during the Darwin boot up, my system says Chameleon 1.0.12
    • AppleDecrypt (default)
    • SMBIOS-EFI (default)
    • Disabler.kext (default)
    • OHR NOTESfrom other thread: (OpenHaltRestart - doesn't seem to do anything for my sleep/shutdown though, so seems useless)
    • Drivers>VGA>ATI> HD 2xxx 3xxx NOTE: HUGE MISTAKE! THIS GAVE ME A HORRIBLY SCRAMBLED DISPLAY!!!
    • EFI String for Intel
I have since reinstalled and NOT selected the two items above listed in red.
    • Intel SATA (this is not the Intel SATA AHCI option, the 530 doesn't offer an AHCI setting in the BIOS even though the chipset has been reported to support AHCI. Some believe that putting the SATA MODEin "RAID" mode in the BIOS might enable AHCI. In windows there is reportedly a way to activate AHCI via software. All of this is googled info, I really don't know but my "SATA Mode" settings in the BIOS are set to "IDE" and not "RAID" and I'm installing the non-AHCI option here)
    • NTFS-3G NOTE from other thread: (haven't tried with an NTFS partition to mount yet)
    • Intel Pro 100/VE NOTE from other thread: (but this is useless, tried, doesn't work, you need the other kext to get onboard LAN working)

[*]Click "install"

[*]Click "skip" when it tells you that it's checking the whole DVD to verify it

[*]Once it rebooted, I hit the F12 when starting up so I could make it boot from the hard drive instead of from the iATKOS DVD

I didn't select any kernel, which should give me the vanilla kernel. I have 1.0.15 Dell BIOS on my 530.

Okay, SO many things are GOOD with iATKOS right off the bat. With the additional kext, I have the onboard NIC working (which is HUGE for so many reasons) and that kext didn't work with my Kalyway install. That in itself is a good enough reason for me to go with iATKOS. The fact that USB worked out of the box and I can do updates is even better. It also goes to sleep and recovers from sleep (as long as I stay at 10.5.5 If I go to 10.5.6, it completely locks up when going to sleep. NOTE FOR THE RECORD: In my BIOS the sleep is set to S1

Unfortunately, I also have a HUGE problem, and that's video. I'm having an issue where my 22" display occasionally blanks out. Like if the cable were loose and somebody was wiggling it. Oddly enough, I had this problem before with my Kalyway install and actually had to switch out one 22" monitor for another. But the current monitor works fine with Kalyway.

I've tried about 10+ different installs to see if I can fix it or completely identify the problem. Unfortunately, there are so many variables and it happens so intermittantly, that I can't be 100% sure, but I THINK that it has to do with the newest ATI drivers.

I have a Sapphire HD 2600 Pro. In the past, I used the great installation packages from this thread here and I got my video card up and running perfectly with QE in my Kalyway install. The only odd thing is that it was reported as being "ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT" (see post above for system profiler info) but it worked and that was all that mattered. So when I first did this iATKOS install, I used the same installer... but it didn't work. No QE support ;)

So I went to the great ATI installer thread and found the new installers! Great! I downloaded the "ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro Pcie - Device ID: 9589" installer and loaded it up. Everything seemed to be great, and I had QE support and I was typing up a post full of praise when my monitor blanked out. I tried many different things through new installs. I tried not updating to 10.5.6, I tried installing the new package before the update, after the update and every which way but to no avail. For whatever reason, this seems to be causing me problems. I even tried the "ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT pice" installer (for Device ID: 9588, which is NOT the card I have) and that was a total disaster.

As far as I can tell, the old installer (which is no longer linked in the first post of that thread, but was working for my 10.5.2 and 10.5.3 install) doesn't cause these blanking problems. Unfortunately, it doesn't give me QE and I HAVE to have QE so I can install FCP. So, my next 'solution' is going to be to try to get the OLD installer (with no blanking problems) to recognize QE. There is a post with a how-to for editing the "Info.plist" THe post is for somebody using a 2400, but hopefully it will work.

Here's a link to that post: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=957032

Wish me luck!

Here is what I'm going to try (these are the steps from that post linked above, but tweaked for my card)

Here is solution in steps:

We need

1. this kexts (from 1st page of this topic) <- I'm going to use the OLD 2600 Pro kexts

2. Kext helper (u already have it i think) <- I have this already but it's here for those who don't

3. Plist editor (u have it, or goooogle it ) <- This is included in Xcode. here is "Property_List_Editor_2.1.dmg" from a link in these forums or here is "PlistEdit Pro" which is some kind of shareware that Google keeps leading me to. I think I can just use a text editor as well.

At first install kexts, reboot and get working resolution, but without QE/CI.

2nd. Here the trick: go to the /system/library/extentions and find there ATIRadeonX2000.kext (!!!)

and dont change right that file, copy it on desktop (or somewhere else) and open copy (show package contents), find "Info.plist" and open it with plist editor. Find string with "IOPCIMatch", put there your id dev 0x94c31002 (thats 2400 pro id), save it.

Now, install this kext with Kext helper. Reboot. here is QE/CI

NOTE: Here is the string from my working (QE/CI no blanking) Kalyway install:

<key>IOPCIMatch</key>

<string>0x94001002 0x94011002 0x94021002 0x94031002 0x95811002 0x95831002 0x95891002 0x94c81002 0x94c91002 0x95001002 0x95011002 0x95051002 0x95071002 0x95041002 0x95061002 0x95981002</string>

I think that the id dev for my card is: 0x95891002 This matches the Device ID (9589) plus the Vendor which is ATI (1002) So now I just need to see if this is NOT present when I install the original ATI drivers (which no longer give QE/CI support) onto my iATKOS install

ADDED: Here's another link talking about how to edit the plist. This one also seems to include a link to a difft set of kexts: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=962846

ADDED: Here's somebody who seems to have the same issue I have with the older (I guess) installer and 10.5.5 and iatkos. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=973227

HERE is somebody experiencing the exact same problems as me with the 10.5.6 drivers:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=1022526

I can't tell if this person is having the same problem or not. They just describe it as flickering:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=1025212

Okay, the plist editing was a trainwreck. I installed the older ATI drivers (which work with QE and CI under 10.5.3) into my 10.5.5 and everything looks great (lots of resolutions, etc) but no QE/CI As noted at the bottom of my last post, I thought I'd try the plist editing solution which others have used when their cards work but don't report QE/CI. Total disaster. Broken half-screen etc.

My newest attempt is to use the 10.5.5 drivers which I was lucky enough to find via a google cache search (well, I hope it was lucky)

They're available here: http://tinyurl.com/3qcg8g

I found this info in this post here where somebody got it working. It had the following quoted from the original post of the thread (which has long since been edited)

Update: try pkg for 2600 Pro & XT, 3850 & 3870 and maybe ( 2400 series ) also 3650 users try this Report back

Unfortunately, a couple posts later David Leonard (who had used that kext to get things working) was reporting problems with QT crashing etc. Post is here

Here's another post where this old set is working and I'll note that it seems to be working 100% so far on my 10.5.5 setup. No monitor flicker/drop outs at all. And I've been watching some QT stuff to see if I have the same issues that David had. So far so good.

Interesting link suggesting an old Netkas Natit for keeping this all running after an upgrade to 10.5.6

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=1014796

Here's another person going from a working 10.5.5 install up to 10.5.6 using the plist edit. Now that I have the 10.5.5 working with QE, maybe this will work. (as opposed to earlier when the plist edit failed miserably for me just in 10.5.5)

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=1016212

BOTTOM LINE: The old (and no longer linked in the ATI installer thread) installer from the ATI thread seems to have worked great. It's been a few days since I've installed it and I haven't seen any issues. For now, I'm happy with 10.5.5 and don't feel like I have to upgrade to 10.5.6 If I do decide to go to 10.5.6 then hopefully the plist edit will work.

Post like yours make the board valuable. I tried 530 before with iDeneb, no luck. Then I sold it and got Dell XPS 420 (after I watched the video on youtube "XPS 420 OSX" where install looks easy). Still getting "Still waiting for root device" problems, getting desperate. XPS 420 is nicer, IMHO than I 530 and the difference on Outlet was like $80. I wish somebody would write instruction like yours for XPS 420...maybe you :|

@HolyCrap, What 2 audio kexts did you use? I tried the ALC888 kexts but it hasn't worked like it did with my Kalyway install.

UPDATE: I looked through your Kalyway tutorial and eventually found the codec dump that ThaShef (sp?) uploaded for Randy and I used AppleHDAPatcherv1.20, now BOTH front and back work!!!

If only my Time Machine could be fixed that easily. I got so frustrated in trying to fix my TM (to do a back up of this fresh install of iATKOS before I updated to 10.5.6) that I gave up and updated to 10.5.6 anyway. Surprisingly everything worked fine.

I got everything to work without too much trouble except like others have reported the computer doesn't wake up after going to sleep (I call that the big sleep) and when I shut down it restarted instead.

Well, I'm happy to report that while trying to fix the sleep problem much to my surprise I fixed the shut down problem instead. :D

It's a very easy fix, just a small change in the BIOS Setup. Here's how to fix it:

1. Hit F2 during startup to enter the BIOS Setup

2. Go to Power Management Setup

3. Change "Remote Wake Up" from On to Off

That did it for me. Now it shuts down and restarts like it should. Sleep still doesn't work. Has anyone had any luck with that?

My Specs:

Dell Inspiron 530

Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz

4GB RAM

iATKOS v5i upgraded to 10.5.6

Audio works with ALC888 kext

Visiontek ATI HD 2600 Pro (had to install driver)

Realtek LAN card

I haven't been online here for a while and missed all these questions. Sorry about that.

As far as the audio goes, I used kext helper to install HDAEnabler.kext and AppleHDA.kext I got this info from another user and I may have mentioned it in more detail in a different thread. I'll try to find a link to the files so people reading this thread can download them without having to search all over the place.

Regarding sleep and shutdown. Both sleep and shutdown work for me but I am still using 10.5.5 Personally I don't have any need to go to 10.5.6 and I'm living by the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I rely on my hackintosh for some work I have to get done and 'breaking' it now for no good reason would be foolhearty in my personal case. It sounds like the sleep problems are relegated to those who have bumped up to 10.5.6 I may try some of the potential solutions in a couple months, but probably not before then. If anybody comes up with a 100% working version, I'd love it if you posted that info here. Thanks

Thanks again for those who've posted here. And let me go find those audio kexts...

I BELIEVE that this zip contains the audio kexts I used to get my setup working: link

That zip came from this post here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...st&p=903620

EDIT: I did a quick file comparison and it DOES appear that these are the exact kexts I used to get my audio working. Once they're installed and the computer was rebooted, I was able to not only see my audio info in system profiler but I was also then able to select whether I wanted the output to go to the speakers (in the back) or through the headphones (port in the front) Hope this helps and let me know if for some reason these kexts do NOT help or work for you.

Thanks

I did the same thing. But this option has to be combined with S1 for sleep (if I remember correctly).

Working on Virtualbox now. Having XP running within Leopard is a great thing for me. I need to use XP because my company's VPN depends on it. Now with the 'Seamless Windows' option it looks great.

But the Virtualbox experience under Leopard is not so smooth as under Ubuntu - but I could live with it.

Another thing I am considering is to upgrade my 2G memory to 4G. Are you guys able to fully utilize the 4G memory in Leopard? (I thought 32bit OS could not do that. Gimme a lesson if I was wrong).

I am able to use all of the 4GB memory in Leopard, so I'd recommend that you upgrade to 4GB. It's true that in 32-bit operating systems you can't use the full 4GB of memory but Leopard runs as a 64-bit OS if you are using a 64-bit CPU such as the Intel Core 2 Duo. I also have 32-bit Ubuntu and Windows XP running on the same box and they both only use a little more than 3GB of the memory.

I left the sleep setting at S3 and the shutdown still works. Not sure what difference that setting makes.

Thanks for this thread but I installed iATKOS on my dell inspiron 530 I got yesterday with

the customize options on this thread but I get the error "Please restart your computer hold down the power button...."

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Thanks

P.S - My motherboard is Dell inc. 0FM586

BIOS is 1.0.18

Ok!

After alot of PAIN on the Dell Inspiron 530 this is how to get it running with this configuration:

Problem. Scrambled image when booting, looks really bad. Described by many users.

Configuration:

Dell inspiron 530, Intel 2 core processor (not core 2 duo), SATA drive, 3Gig RAM, ATI 3650 Graphics 256Mb VRAM.

Download these items:

iATKOS 5i

natite HD 3650

1. Install iATKOS 5i.

2. Dont boot the install, remove disk and mount it on another Mac.

3. Open this folder; /System/Library/Extensions

4. Remove ATI and nVidia graphics drivers

5. Install natit HD package

6. Run a disk repair

7. Unmount and remove disk, install back in Dell

8. Start, everything works fine

9. Fixt internal network card and audio as described earlier in this thread.

You need this:
Kext Helper b7

Intel82566MM.kext
AppleHDA.kext
HDAEnabler.kext

You just saved many $$$ buying a cheap dell, and alot of time following this thread.

Anyone got a clue how to run a dual monitor setup with this hardware:

Dell Inspiron 530

ATI 3650, ONE DVI port

Integrated graphics X3100?

Two monitors, on 19" and one 23".

What drivers are needed for the integrated graphics? I only get 1024*768 or something like that when booting the system with monitor plugged to the integrated port, and when i do, the ATI card is DEAD and OSX will not find it.

So the problem is really to get the integrated card to allow more rez options.

AND

To get the integrated card to run simultaniously with the AIT card

Happy for some clues!

//K

Also i have this issue with sleep.

If its working for you other guys i want it to work aswell!

I have put the powermanagment to S1, and also remote wakeup is OFF.

Is there something with my ATI 3650 graphics that wont allow waking up after sleep?

It goes down to sleep with no problem, but will not wake up.

Maybe i need to ad some kind of powermanagment kext for the graphics?

nice if you guys have a clue.
