Folks,

A while ago I saw a $29 for 4GB DDR2 deal at Fry's. After grabbed one and installed it to my XPS420 hackpro with 10.5.4, just loading up some programs and OSX always halts.

There are 2 banks of DDR2 memory for this 4GB package. My XPS420 originally has 2x1GB DDR2 and 2x512MB DDR2 installed and no problem at all. I just used the 2 new 2GB banks to replace the 2 original 512MB banks. After installation, XPS420 BIOS picks up the new RAM capacity. And OSX reports 6GB as well. Then I load up some big program. After playing on it for a while, 10.5.4 always halts.

The CPU for the XPS 420 is Intel Core2Quad Q6600 processor.

The new RAM banks are totally the same as my original ones. I tried to change the installation positions for the RAMs but no luck to make OSX stable.

My Installation is from KalyWay 10.5.1 Installation CD and upgraded to 10.5.4 all the way.

I know 10.5.4 is still 32bit kernel. But I also read something from here said >4GB should be working (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=133587).

Is this a fixed limitation for 4GB for 10.5.4 or we could install/configure something to mimic real MacPro to use more than 4GB physical memory?

Is PAE automatically enabled by 10.5.4?

Thanks a lot!
