seeruk
*Updated 070109* First the specs: EVGA 750i FTW Motherboard Intel Core 2 E6600 4gb RAM Nvidia 9800 GTX graphics card I am happy to report that after spending way too much time trying all kinds of distros and methods I have what I call a 'basic success' That is OSX working, with full resolution and QE, and LAN working. With these basics I have something to work on without having to reboot into windows all the time to sort out all the smaller things! The basic method I have happened upon is as follows: Use iDeneb 10.5.5 (no need to use any variables on boot of CD.... well -v is useful) Select X11 Select 9.4 XNU kernel Select NVKush in graphics section Select an SMBIOS option ... I chose the DDR800 option... not sure its important which you choose. Select Nforce test ATA drivers in chipset section (MeDevil's driver... it really is the key to this chipset as no other one works without the dreaded 'Still waiting for root device error') Add OSXtools86 from the apps section You can add any apps you like if you wish.... but be warned the firefox is in spanish! Nothing else at this point, just install. On reboot, boot with -x to go into safe mode (you cannot boot to a GUI now otherwise) Install the 9800 with this installer http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...&hl=9800gtx Reboot Install LAN with this driver http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=125569 v0.62.7 (use OSX86tools to install) Install Slice's USB kexts (all four) http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=117029 Install slashhacks ATA driver Before rebooting for this driver, you may as well enable quartz too using OSX86tools Reboot - voila! You should have a full resolution and working QE and be internet able! So right now, there are a number of issues, but they can now be tackled without major reboots to windows to research I recommend that at this point you take a time machine image for a restore purposes when messing with the rest of the stuff. LAN driver does stop occasionally and I don't know why. It might be due to heavy load as the last crash has been as soon as transmission got going on some torrents and the other times have been when connecting to the server in my house and starting to transfer data - does anyone know of a better driver? I don't know if cpus=1 or maxmem=3072 is really needed at this point. I had a couple of GUI freezes so I am now booting with maxmem=3072 in the com.apple.Boot.plist and have not had any real issues. Hoping to keep both cores for now! Not investigated sound card yet but will do tonight Shutdown/Restart doesn't complete. I am sure I will find/remember more... but this is a real breakthrough for me, after 3 days I was at the point of giving up! seeruk
Some small things I forgot: Watching boot in verbose mode I see a lot of mDNSResponder errors and a timeout trying to write kernel symbols (or something like that), which from looking at the official Apple forums seems to be a common thing for all 10.5.5 builds and is fixed by some security update. It doesnt seem to cause a problem other than delaying boot by 20 seconds or so. I also see some EHCI? / USB errors at boot which I dont know are a problem as such until I get to do some further testing tonight. But most USB things seem to work such as kb & mouse. Check out my Series 7 nForce thread........for working USB you need matching kernel and System.kext versions.......use slashack's AppleNForceATA.kext and eno's nForceLAN.kext with Voodoo RV v1.0 Rev_A kernel....... seeruk
Thanks for the info Verdant Your post was my starting point on this epic voyage I speak for everyone when I say we really appreciate the effort! Actually I am back to update already on fixing some things... and to report what doesnt work! First - these 4 kexts by Slice have fixed all USB issues Everything works USB wise even my HD Camcorder! http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=117029 I already installed slashhacks ATA driver, so far so good! I have started using maxmem=3072 after having a few issues with GUI freezes but hoping I can keep both cpus active. On the LAN side its not so good.... v0.62.7 of eno's driver works OK for simple webbrowsing... but any kind of heavy load kills it in seconds... meaning a reboot to get it active again v0.62.8 installed but didnt even detect a cable plugged in. I see a version available in OSXtools for a driver for my NIC... anyone know which one it is? Is it eno's Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/145217-basic-success-with-evga-750i-ftw-mobo-and-9800gtx/#findComment-1031318 Share on other sites

Try using Voodoo RV kernel + slashack's AppleNForceATA kext for all cores and >3GB RAM operation.....also try c1ramp=0 under Kernel Flags in com.apple.Boot.plist if you have any mouse/freeze issues..... seeruk
Well I tried the two drivers suggested by OSX86tools (it offers one for sound and one for LAN) and neither of them worked. The sound just did not function, and the LAN has the same problem as Eno's 0.6.28 driver i.e. no cable detected. So I then found this driver for sound and it works perfectly! http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...ost&id=6740 from SkippyRetard's post http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=36520 I have only tested 2 channel so far and only with headphones plugged into my speakers (it was late at night and the baby was asleep ) but in an hour of playing music, video etc it never missed a beat Sooo... I wont post it as being approved until I check the output options with my 5.1 speakers tonight, but if you are happy with 2-channel these certainly seem to do the trick! As of now then... everything works except for the LAN. Still fine for browsing and light transfers.... but selecting any other machine in my network and browsing it's shares is enough to kill it I'm gonna leave the kernel option until last... mainly as I have never changed the kernel before and have no clue how I should go about it. seeruk
Good news! I successfully upgraded to 10.5.6 using apple update!!! Even better the LAN is much more stable with 10.5.6 .... I just copied a 4gb dmg file from the same server that would kill the LAN 2 seconds after connecting to it! On the downside the process wasnt simple, i will detail it tomorrow when less tired And at the moment booting freezes without cpus=1 .... sure I can fix that though Will update details tomorrow -night all! seeruk
OK a bit more detail in the updating to 10.5.6 Basically in consists of a few preparation steps before doing the update, and then some post-update work to restore some drivers. First the preperation, I used these instructions taken from http://www.espressoreport.com/191/hackbook...-mac-os-x-1056/ So, if you want to get to the totally broken state I listed above, here’s the steps. These are ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to install the update successfully. I’ll post more on how to correct all that’s broken later — or someone else can along with me. Steps to update from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 (Remember, best practice this one on a backup OS, not your running/working volume): 1) Head to http://######.com/blog/?cat=3 and download all 3 of the new tools. 2) You’ll need to update to PC-EFI v9 and Chameleon. Use the ‘Universal OSx86 Installer’ tool to handle this job for you. Select main package, select ‘Apply Kext Package’, and select ‘Install PC_EFI v9 Chameleon Edition 1.0.12′. This is necessary to take advantage of the DSDT.AML file we’ll be making in the next step. Click install, just make sure you’re making these changes to the right volume (which can be selected in the combo box up top). Make sure the ‘boot’ file in your root changed, so make note of the size/time of the original one and then check to ensure it got updated. OR, you can use the one from here — http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=132757. The ‘chameleon’ file in the package is really the ‘boot’ file. You just need to rename ‘chameleon’ to ‘boot’ and copy the file over. That said, it’s probably best to just let the ‘Universal OSx86 Installer’ tool do the work and ensure the ‘boot’ file got updated. 3) Grab DSDT Patcher - http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...t=0&start=0 - and make yourself a ‘dsdt.aml’ file for your specific machine and place it in the root of the install volume. I suspect you can use PCWIZ’s ‘DSDT Patcher’ GUI as well, although I used the command line version. 4) You’ll find a new directory called /UOIBackup or something like that (created by the Universal Installer). It will contain 3 kext files. These are the “defensive” kexts that are used with a Boot-132 install. Me, I installed these kexts last go-round with 10.5.5. So, I had them already installed. One was updated from what I had installed, but anyway, use KextHelper or whatever kext installer you use and install them to your Extensions folder Kill your extensions cache after installing them and repair permissions. At this point, you’re ready to reboot with the new bootloader/EFI, the dsdt, aml in use, and the defensive kexts loading up — still at 10.5.5. So, reboot, watch the new stuff, and get back into 10.5.5. Everything should still be as it was at this point. You can now load 10.5.6 from the Software Update app. Just be aware of what you’ll run into after a couple of reboots. You’ll get into the OS, but most of all your devices will be broken — at least for now. To ease trouble shooting, I removed many of the custom kexts I had installed before applying the update such as the USB kexts, NVKush, and the NForce LAN. the other reason I did this was in case anything was now supported by official Apple kexts in the update. As it turns out, the USB kexts are still needed, as is the LAN (Which now works brilliantly on 10.5.6 as opposed to dying under heavy load as it did in 10.5.5). So once the update applied it rebooted... however it just froze. So I rebooted again with cpus=1 and it was fine. It reboots once more as part of the patching process, and will again freeze without cpus=1. So I am stuck using cpus=1 for now... but I am sure I can fix that tonight. Even now it still will not boot because the the display is not working. So boot into safe mode (i.e. cpus=1 -x -v ) use the Universal Installer to apply the EFI string for the 9800GTX. You may as well install the LAN driver again and the USB kexts once more (you did keep a copy of these right? ) and reboot once more and everything is running sweet apart from the cpus=1 thing. This has all been a 'trial run' kind of process so I will tidy up and streamline the process in the first post as there are now a lot of uneccesary steps / better ways of doing things. The Voodoo Release Version v1.0 Rev_A kernel is very easy to install as it comes as a .dmg file...... Will this be compatible with my 10.5.6 ? KellyKelly
Glad to hear that it works. I just ordered the motherboard today since my last motherboard BIOS fried. I would try the ALC888Audio.pkg from http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=36520 when I get the motherboard on Wednesday see if that driver works. About the eno nforce driver I found that cpus=1 works without any errors or freeze.
