Hi Everyone, I just wanted to share my experience of Installing Mac OS X 10.4.4 on to my Compaq Presario 1500AU Notebook.

I have included Full detailed instructions and Quick Steps at the bottom. I hope they are of some assistance to you.

These are the steps I used to create a Dual Booting Mac OS X & Windows XP machine. See my signature for hardware and what is working!

Kind Regards Cal.

My Installation [Full Instructions]: Mac OS X 10.4.4 [8G1165] x86

Insert the burnt Mac OS X x86 Install DVD in your DVD ROM. Make sure your BIOS is able to boot from DVD before a hard disk. Now you will be presented with a boot menu. Press enter to proceed. You will see the Apple Grey Boot Screen, after a short while you will see the spinning coloured wheel, you should then see the Mac OS X installation setup.

Click on Utilities in the top menu and select Disk Utility. This will allow you to partition your Hard Disk & format one of the selected partitions to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). In Disk Utility select the physical Hard Drive to be partitioned then select partition. Disk Utility will show you a Volume Scheme at present you probably have one parition. On the Drop down list select two partitions. Your drive will then be partitioned and you can select how much space per partition by dragging the divider between the partitions.

Select the NON-WinXP partition and select erase & format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

PLEASE NOTE: I destroyed all previous data on my machine and backed-up before proceeding. Make sure you select the correct partition. If you don't (and in some cases, even if you do) you might lose all stuff on the hard disk, so be very CAREFUL. Don't blame me, if you lose data or if your computer does not boot.

Once you have completed the formating of the partition, you can quit Disk Utility (press alt-Q on the keyboard). Now you will be back in the setup. Now you can simply do a next, next, next to complete the installation. Advanced users can choose not to install printer drivers by clicking on the customize button during the setup. Once, your installation is complete, your computer would reboot.

Boot from the Mac OSx86 DVD again and hit enter at the boot menu. When the Mac OS X setup starts again, goto Utilities (in the top menu) and select Startup Disk. It would show three disks - Win XP Partition, Mac OSX Partition and the DVD Drive (your options might differ). Select the Win XP partition and reboot the computer. Remove the Mac OSx86 DVD and let your computer boot normally. Now, your computer would boot into Windows XP if installed. If not yet installed you may get an error message "Missing Operating System". Easy to fix load your Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive and reboot and install Windows XP. Within Windows XP Setup...At the blue screen to select the partition to install.Make sure you select the UNFORMATTED SPACE then install Windows XP.

Once setup is completed copy the CHAIN0 file to the root of your drive usually C:\CHAIN0

Right click on My Computer and select properties go to the Advanced Tab

click edit boot settings this will open C:\boot.ini in notepad. At the end, add this line:

c:\CHAIN0="Mac OS X x86"

Save and close the file now.

Now you should have a dual-booting machine with Win XP and Mac OS X on it. When you will boot your machine, you will be presented with two operating systems. Note: If you select 'Apple Mac OS X x86', it will give you another boot menu. In this boot menu, you will have to select Mac OS X again, otherwise it would move back to the first boot menu.

My Installation Method: [Quick Instructions]

1. insert Mac OS X x86 Install DVD

2. once Mac OS X has loaded into setup select language to use

3. open disk utility... partition drive into 2 partitions, this partitions & formats.

My Drive Partitioned

partition 1 40.00GB Windows XP (installled later)

partition 2 15.89GB Mac OS X

4. select partition 2, 15.89GB [Mac OS X] press alt-q to close disk utility

5. go back to Mac OS X install & continue

6. Once Mac OS X is installed, then load Windows XP & edit the boot.ini file & copy the chain0 file

to root of drive c:\

7. reboot select Mac OS X & continue with setup for your username etc...

Although I have to congratulate caladan1810  for creating an installation guide also (and a detailed one too), I would say I think it would be preferable to try a slightly adjusted method.

I think the method mentioned above is used for if there is no Win XP (I might be wrong). If you have XP installed then use Partition Magic to partition the drive and free up some (enough) space to install OSX on. It’s much safer and because you’re in Windows you’re less likely to erase Windows. Then load the Mac OSx86 DVD and run Disk Utility and erase the new partition and follow on with the remainder of the guide.

About dual booting. I already had XP on my system and then installed OSX. So what I get when I switch on my pc is a menu where I have to either select OSX (10 sec timer) or press any key to get to a boot menu. If I press enter or wait it loads OSX nice and easy but if I press any key it then gives me an option of choosing OSX or XP. Selecting either loads the operating system with no more boot menus.

But I must mention I did not use the chain 0 thing. I did try and use it but it just created another boot menu if I selected XP which then gave me the options of selecting XP or Mac OSx86 and the Mac OSx86 leads to no where (for some reason)! So I got rid of the extra long in the Chain 0. So it works nice now but I do wish the XP was my default and not the OSX because it annoying having to restart the pc again because I forgot to select Up before the end of the countdown

This is a diagram (actual wording may be wrong).

After pressing any key before the 10sec timer (otherwise auto boots OSX)

Without the c:\CHAIN0="Mac OS X x86":

1st boot menu-------------------------------------------2nd boot menu

Mac OSx86 (Default with 10sec timer)------------NONE - Loads OSX

WinXP------------------------------------------------------NONE - Loads XP

With the c:\CHAIN0="Mac OS X x86":

1st boot menu-------------------------------------------2nd boot menu

Mac OSx86 (Default with 10sec timer)------------NONE - Loads OSX

WinXP------------------------------------------------------WinXP ------------------------------ Loads XP

---------------------------------------------------------------Mac OS X x86 -------------------- Creates Error

Sorry if this is a little confusing. Not sure what the point is now.
