ThizzleDipp Posted January 4, 2009 Share Posted January 4, 2009 So basically i went into /system/library/coreservices and i selected show package contents for finder and in an attempt to change the finder logo in the dock i replaced Finder.png and Finder.rsrc with new edited files. I also went into dock.app and replaced Finder.icns as well with my edited version. That went fine but the finder icon in the dock stayed the same. So i tried to reboot the dock by going to terminal and typing "killall Dock". The dock rebooted but the finder icon is the same face guy instead of my custom icon. Now i can't figure out how to get the icon to show up so i went to terminal and i thought if i typed "killall Finder" it would reboot finder and show the icon. But instead i ended up with this: If you look at the side bar in the finder window it doesn't have the desktop, my documents, documents, user, pictures, or anything, or the separation bars. They weren't deleted they are just invisible because if i click over one they show up like this I tried to go into terminal and i tried typing "restore Finder". The command worked but it didn't fix my issue. So how do i fix this? ThizzleDipp Posted January 4, 2009 Author Share Posted January 4, 2009 UPDATE: Problem Solved. I found out that killall Finder reboots finder like i thought. The problem was my updated Finder.rsrc file. I found out that the file didn't actually have anything to do with the icon like a regular rsrc file for changing icons. It was what dealt with the sidebar transparency apparently. I replaced the old file and relaunched finder and everything is back to normal. Now i still can't figure out how to remove the finder icon from the dock. I replaced the file so in "get info" for finder.app it shows my custom icon. But the dock icon is unchanged... any ideas? Unfortunately though it doesn't work on my Tiger since i have 10.4.11 and it's only compatible up to 10.4.8 I searched google for something to work with my version but i found nothing. Do you know of another program that works to do this on Tiger. Because i hate the look of the Finder icon and i want to change it to something else. Because i was able to download it for tiger, and i can use it, but it won't let me apply my changes. I read something about the presence of safari 3 in 10.4.11 or something disables the ability to apply your changes to your dock. ThizzleDipp Posted January 5, 2009 Author Share Posted January 5, 2009 For the color of the dock you can go to www.leoparddocks.com and they have premade ones that you can download. Then you follow the directions on the site and replace the files provided. But you can also edit your own on photoshop. I just downloaded the trial version of photoshop CS2 for free and i made this dock: All you have to do to make your own is go to /MacintoshHD/System/Library/CoreServices and scroll down to Dock. Then right click on Dock and click show package contents. This will open a new window, then you click on /Contents/Resources and scroll down to scurve-l.png and there should be 4 of them. There should be one for S, M, L, and XL. What you want to do is right click on these and open them in photoshop. Then you can just use the magic wand tool to create layers and use color overlays. I used a gradient overlay for the dock i made. And you can also edit separator.png and make your own color dock sizing thing. I made the one for this dock blue. But when you save the file when you're done editing it make sure you save it as the same file name of the file you were editing. So if you were editing scurve-l.png save it to my documents as scurve-l.png so it makes a new edited copy. Then back up the original file, delete it from resources and replace the new edited .png file in it's place. Once you have replaced all of them go to terminal and type in "killall Dock" without the quotations of course. And make sure you capitalize Dock or else it won't work. That will reset the dock and it will be the new color. The program with the issue was TransparentDock. It's not compatible with my version. So i can't change my dock look. And i didn't really like DragThing, i want to be able to change the look of the regular mac dock, not create an entirely new one.
