Hey there,

I have updated to 10.5.6 2 days ago and everything went smoothly.

But when I tried to play a HD TV show (just paid ~$200 for lost 1-2-3-5th) I get this error and just gray video..

rented movies wont play either

post-158883-1229769580_thumb.png

My installation is; 10.5.4 JAS > 10.5.5 (with nvdarwin) > fix dsdt > 10.5.6

Later I have tried 10.5.4 JaS > 10.5.5 (didn't install nvidia kexts) > 10.5.6 (without dsdt) > installed nvdarwin and got CI/QE but still received same error

Also tried restoring all nvidia kext (AFAIK) from 10.5.5 TM backup but that didn't work either..

I suspect since the card is 9600 GT, it assumes that the system has mini-dvi port with HDCP...

Also my card has hdmi + display port (???) and 2 x DVI

Spec:

Gigabyte X48-DQ6

Q6600

2x Palit GeForce 9600GT 1GB

http://www.palit.biz/main/vgapro.php?id=645

4x Samsung SyncMaster 960BG

6gb ram

etc..

any ideas?

UPDATE

BAM! Found the b.stard kext: AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext

Just delete and clear cache..

I can play rented & HD movies (with QT 7.5.5)

The problem is not the video card entirely, you can have the correct card but if you dont have the proper Display (the monitor not the card) it wont play.

There were reports since first day of the new MacBooks.

see:

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/11...n_measures.html

but its working with 10.5.5

new macbooks werent able to play on 10.5.5

also the article says "all future Macs from the Cupertino-based company are likely to include the same restrictions experienced by users of its latest notebooks", so it should be based on hardware/port/graphic card? (something like, when it detects 9600 gt it looks for hdcp signal?)

to clarify: I wouldn't have this problem with 7600GT (just guessing)and I dont have the problem with 10.5.5

I guess/hope there should be a trick..

Unibody MBs had a different 10.5.5 build. Looks like Apple starting enforcing HDCP with the new MBs and they made it public with 10.5.6.

Unfortunately, your monitor doesn't support HDCP so you can't play the videos in HD.

You can try VGA out to see if it plays.

Also, you need Quicktime 7.5.7 to allow SD playback. (software update only for unibody MBs, doesn't come with 10.5.6)

I can't test it because I don't buy from iTunes.

here is a free HD clip (if you have an iTunes account)

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore...63&s=143441 (itunes link)

how about this:

I have connected my early 2008 macbook pro (10.5.6 & GeForce 8600M GT) to my monitor

and it plays HD just fine.. (no errors)

so does itunes whine just because it sees the 9600 (related to new nvidia kexts etc)

or will it whine whenever it detects any HDCP capable graphic card

Tried that clip and it worked fine on my external monitor (very likely non-HDCP) from HDMI to DVI.

It might be something else that is enforcing HDCP, maybe DisplayPort or 9600?

thanks for trying

Just tried dumping the rom and feeding it to nvcap maker.. got same value that nvdarwin is using..

I am out of ideas..

Which monitor do you have connected?

EDIT:

List of HDCP compliant monitors

EDIT2:

I have a HDCP capable card buy my monitor is analog (VGA) and I could see the sneak preview of lost that you posted.

macgirl, could you take a quick look at this list; (extensions from 10.5.6 update package)

post-158883-1229762519_thumb.png

are there any other extensions related to nvidia

I'll give another try..

EDIT: Also when I boot into safe mode iTunes plays HD files fine..

EDIT2: Tried again, replaced kexts from 10.5.5, tried voodoo, deleted applegraphicscontrol and applegraphicspowermanagment, no luck...

Try Quicktime 7.5.7, it is supposed to fix HDCP issues.

http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/0...757_Leopard.tar

You need to edit QuickTime_Leopard.dist to install.

thank you, 7.5.7 fixed the rented movie playback

but still cant play HD content..
