Hey,

I have been lurking the threads for over a week now and finally decided to try to dual boot my dell xps m1330 with Leopard and Vista. I successfully partitioned the hard drive and went through an install completely using the newest version of iAtkos 5i. However, when I now try and boot Leopard, the load screen with the apple comes on and sits for a while until I "No" symbol(circle with a diagonal line through it appears). Can someone please help me figure out how to solve this problem. I am a pretty much noob at dual booting but know my way around computers decently.

My specs are:

Dell XPS m1330

Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T7300

4 Gb of Ram

120 Gb Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00 Hard Drive

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

Thanks in advance,

Brady

Hey ebs5d

I'm in exactly the same position as you. Same computer, same specs, same iAtkos 5i install. I had no troubles installing but as soon as I try and boot up for the 1st time it freezes with the same "No" symbol you mentioned. The 1st install I used the default settings, 2nd time installing I tried some other settings in the 'Custom Install' panel (can't remember which ones).

Trying to boot up using '-v', I get an error stating "Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.AppleAHCIPort". So in BIOS I changed the hard disk mode to ATA. Still didn't seem to boot completely.

Hope someone can help as I'm new to this and would love to get some Apple on my M1330.

hey i have the same set up as you ebs and got it working a few months ago with a lot of work, but let me tell you it was definately worth it i can do basically everything i need to on my mac 1330. I highly reccomend if you didn't already check out thsi guide for installing iatkos, i tried to do things myself a little bit, but no... follow his guide exactly. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=119654.

furthermore, both mayhem and A-hamster i hope i remember how to do this and all but lets see i think i played around it with a lot and remembered reading somewhere that its happens to actually be a video card issue. First let me ask you on your first boot into OSX have you ever been able to boot into at all? or has it always just stopped at that error. If you have been able too, i reccomend that you copy whatever video card driver your using to a usb or what not or put it on the desktop before you restart and go into safe mode. i forget the safe mode command but it might be -s. and once in safe mode install the video card driver and i believe mine didin't have anymore problems with that error. one last question, have you guys tried to update the leopard os yet? i'll try to help as much as I can cause i know how frustrating it can be i think it took me a few days to get it perfect.

one more thing here is a great thread for trying to dual boot follow everything he says unless its option for example i kept the darwin boot loader. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=39253

actually i remember another thing. If when your reinstalling iatkos the option to customize i tended to check the ahci enabler or whatever it was called that allowed the ahci to be fixed and i never had too change it to ata in the bios. Just a thought if you would like to experiment.

lastly only downside is I believed i used a iAtkos 4i but ill still try and help see if my fix works.

Hey flyers18, thanks for the reply.

I used that guide you posted that wingrunr21 wrote. It's very good and I followed it down to the last letter. I just got struck at the First Boot section as I just can't seem to get it completely loaded up. So to answer your question, No I haven't been able to boot up at all.

I might look into the safe mode command next. I have tried cpus=1 and -v but still had problems. Will also try and install one more time and check the ahci enabler.

If that doesn't work, I might try iATKOS_4i. Just finished downloading and about to brun to disk.

Will keep you all posted.

Yea that guide worked really well with 4i havent done 5i yet but make sure you customize and click 9.4.0 cause i dont think it ever blatantly said vanilla kernel.

try the safe mode command it's not -s its actually -x.

furthermore have you tried -v -f i think that helped me get in one time, however usually using the guide and checking ahci enabler i was able to get in first try with 4i . just telling you get ready for installing iatkos a number of times, but ill try and help to make it a lower number haha.

okay i got how to pass the ahci part (just read the guide carefully). it says that 10.5.4 (iatkos 4) has problems with its ahci. so just put it to ata, boot leopard. it first gave me a glimps of hte blue screen, then gave me a black screen, but a way around that is to just keep moving hte trackpad. then install the "fixed" kernels from the bottom of the guide: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=119654 after, just reboot and switch back to ahci and you're done!

only problem i have now is that the trackpad and the keyboard doesn't work at the setup screen, so i'm stuck after the intro movie.

yea when you install look through the customize options of the iatkos 4i and look for ahci enabler fix or something similar and just enable that. usually for me at least it made it so I did not even have to use the fix. try and look for that fix if you would like to attempt to nstalling again.

just posting this guide if you can install this too look for rapidshare link http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/i...hp/t126872.html seems people had success with it. but look through the options in the customization there are some options that i played around with and got it to work. i truly believe its the ahci enabler fix that should be checked

Just out of interest, can you remember which custom install options you picked?

Here's a picture of all the custom install options available in iAKTOS 5i

I also found a list kernel flags with discriptions that could come in handy with trying to boot up.

OSX Flags List for Darwin Bootloader & kernel level

I have had the same problems with iatkos 5i on my dell xps 410 too. If someone could just show which options to choose that would be nice. There is another xps m1530 guide in the genius bar using iatkos 1.0r2 I think and with that one everything works apparently. Actually all the new distros I tried on my 410 would not boot after the install and gave me the no root device error. Either this or it would go blank and I would have to shutdown the computer, leave it unplugged and the after 10 minutes restart it so I could see if the monitor showed something.

main system

efi 9

smbios resovler / or air

intel ahci

ntfs-3g

yes i got it to boot, kinda.

only problem now is that i get an "error encountered...etc etc. pause 5 seconds" and after that, it gives me a blue then black screen and can't do anything. sometimes if i move the touchpad, it will allow me to see the intro video and the first page of the registration, but can't move the trackpad!!!! :)

to be honest alot of it i guessed but if a hamster's worked hopefully he can aide you. mayhem which kernel do you usually choose and for smbios choose apple smbios netkas.

ive never done this cause i didn't use 5i but how abou trying to enable the ps/2 controller fix along with your other options

try using the 9.5.0 voodoo kernel too

sorry bout such a long reply but yea i 4i installed well for me if you posted the custmoize options of 4i i could prob tell u what i chose and it went right in track pad worked etc. booting works fine but you cannot reboot once u install the graphics efi strings, so when you turn off your computer hit restart then use the power button. furthermore i used software update to update all my things too. cause for some reason combo never worked its a very long trial and error process

one last thing before you try 4i when you are customizing make sure to check x86 acpi. and please one more time give me a list of your customization options along with the x86 acpi i am telling you to check

well i got it to work (magically) with the configuration that i have listed a few posts up. i did not use the x3100 drivers in the installer, and osx just detected it and the graphics works perfectly. there were many bugs that irked me like the desktop was not "clickable", as in the icons turned into the background and could not select it. I got pissed so i just uninsatlled osx by deleting the partition.

I'm out of action. My M1330 monitor decided to do a white screen of death so it's unusable. As soon as I turn it on the nmonitor goes white. Can't see BIOS, and can't see anything in Vista. Managed to connect to an external monitor but the resolution and colour is terrible. I did see that the video driver had a code 43 error (I think as it's hard to read) and I have tried to reinstall drivers but no change.

Trying to contact the UK XPS customer service but it's not going to well as I am in France for Christmas and New Years. When I ring it goes to a french speaking machine which I don't understand as I don't speak a word of French. Hope to get this sorted out soon as I have 4 days left on my warrenty, so here's hoping I get it fixed under that.

I'm possitive it has nothing to do with installing osx as I did that on a fresh harddrive and kept my Vista harddrive clean. Will just have to wait until I get another chance to try my hand at an M1330 Apple.

poor you mayhem... on another hand, i got m1330 (x3100 gfx) to work almost perfectly with iatkos 5i (10.5.5)

Here's my little tutorial:

on the DVD installer of iatkos 5i:

main system

efi 9

appledecrypt

smbios (any one works)

intel ahci

speedstep a

laptop battery

ps/2 <- for trackpad and keyboard to work!

don't select a graphics driver if you have a x3100 since it works out of the box vanilla.

for me, the screen sleeps whenever it boots osx (but the system is still running). by pressing Fn + Esc, it somehow resets it and the display turns on.

if you want, you can go to expose (under system preferences) and set hot corners (active screen corners) to "sleep display," so whenever you put your mouse to the corner, it wakes the screen when you pull it out.

for audio, use macgirl's sigmatel 9882 kext: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...st&id=30865

make sure you use kext helper (http://cheetha.net/)

audio should work, but no internal mic as of yet :(

to get the mediakeys working, use the "Install Dell Laptop Post Installer" by sonotone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?wgiqnumhmny

i had experienced issues with the desktop icons going missing and could not click and drag to make a selection box on it. only reason i had this was when i installed incompatible kexts.

The settings and kexts above are correct (at least for me) and works splendidly.

Only problems:

- no internal mic

- no sleep. I click sleep and in 1-2 seconds, turns back on. anyone?

Hey I followed your steps with my m1330 with x3100 but I can't seem to get the audio to work by installing the kext that you provided with cheetha. Do I have to delete any existing kexts?

thanks.

You really need to read more carefully, the instructions tell you to use Macgirl's 9882 Kext using Kext Helper to install it. The link he provided to Cheeta.net is one source you can download the Kext installer tool from.
