I've been experimenting with various gfx cards lately, and noticed something strange.

My 7800GT/256 Asus card gets the following Xbench results:

Quartz Graphics Test 229.17

Line 201.22 13.40 Klines/sec [50% alpha]

Rectangle 287.65 85.88 Krects/sec [50% alpha]

Circle 231.24 18.85 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha]

Bezier 212.78 5.37 Kbeziers/sec [50% alpha]

Text 230.04 14.39 Kchars/sec

OpenGL Graphics Test 237.97

Spinning Squares 237.97 301.88 frames/sec

User Interface Test 407.81

Elements 407.81 1.87 Krefresh/sec

Disk Test 72.89

I swapped in a 9800GTX/512 EVGA and got:

Quartz Graphics Test 217.44

Line 195.42 13.01 Klines/sec [50% alpha]

Rectangle 267.69 79.92 Krects/sec [50% alpha]

Circle 214.91 17.52 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha]

Bezier 204.62 5.16 Kbeziers/sec [50% alpha]

Text 217.32 13.59 Kchars/sec

OpenGL Graphics Test 200.41

Spinning Squares 200.41 254.24 frames/sec

User Interface Test 336.62

Elements 336.62 1.54 Krefresh/sec

---

Cliff notes: 7800GT is 10% faster on 10.5.5 w/ NVinject 0.2.1 than a 9800GTX.

Any thoughts? :(

I should also say that I switched from the 256 to 512 Nvinject to test the two cards, and they were correctly identified.

I'm sure its a fine driver but I dont trust anything except EFI strings...try that

Okay, switched to gfx strings (thanks aqua!). Still the same speed.

Here's my info:

Still the slower than the 7800GT. Has anyone else done this comparison?

Forget Xbench OpenGL Values !!!!

For example an GMA 950 performes better in XBench than Nvidia 6600 GT - so Xbench OpenGL isnt an good OpenGL / GPU test !

Get OpenGLExtensionsviewer and there to BEnch, use an higher resolution >= 1200x800 and you see real differences between GPUs. Very fast cards should be compared with Multisampling*4 - higher GPU loads, also more differences.

Okay, so Xbench does suck, but I'd sure like to think that Quartz would be faster. Aperture is slower as well.

Granted, Quartz Extreme is opengl, but if the UI, OpenGL and Core apps don't have a benefit with a newer card... what's the point? ;)
