Hi guys!

I hope you don't rip my head of..

well since this is my first post, allow me to introduce myself first. I'm a guy from switzerland trying to get a glimpse of the apple world. I've never ever used a mac but lately I bought an IPhone. the smoothness of the GUI and the ease of use made me wonder if there are more nice things to discover from apple. that's in short how i landed here.

So now after almost three days of reading through posts and trying to understand the mechanisms, I'm really stuck. I'm trying to install osx leopard 10.5 from a retail dvd with the boot-132 method. I downloaded the .iso image of the bootdisc from the following thread http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...amp;hl=boot+132 (the one with the modified .kext's). if i boot up with this disc, I get to the darwin prompt. then I insert the osx dvd, type in -v and press enter. then it asks me to type in the hexcode of my drive to start the installation from. This is where my problem starts. If I just press enter without typing in any hexcode, I get back to the darwin prompt and nothing happens (the hexcode it tries to use is "ff"). I also tried playing around with the numbers (80 starts my windows :) , 81 my data drive..). My question therefore is, what am I doing wrong? Is my drive not being recognized or what is the problem? I realy hope someone can help me, or point me in the right direction.

Some information about my system:

Motherboard: Asus Maximus (x38 chipset)

Core 2 Duo X6850

DVD-drive is a IDE-drive connected to a JMicron controller (I already added the JMicronATA.kext in the initrd.img of the bootdisc)

NVIDIA 8800GTX

2 sata hdd's running in IDE enhanced mode (BIOS settings..)

I realy hope someone can help me, it would be much appreciated!

Try JaS 10.5.4......see here......also check BIOS settings

JMicron SATA / PATA Controller [Disabled].....if JMicron present.....unless it works for you [Enabled].....but JMicron is known to cause problems for some....but JMicron patches for OS X Install DVDs are now appearing......

JMicron Controller Mode [AHCI]....if present.....

Execute Disable Bit [Enabled]

ACPI APIC Support [Enabled]

ACPI Suspend Mode [s3] or [s1] or [s1 and S3]

You haven't done anything wrong. You just have to:

1.- boot from your Boot-132 CD and press ESC at the darwin promt to enter the boot device selection screen.

2.- Remove your Boot-132 CD now and insert your retail DVD. Wait until the little DVD-Rom lamp goes off and then press enter. It should now set your Retail DVD as the booting device (you should see it at the darwin screen).

3.- Boot by entering your retail DVD's UUID with:

boot-uuid=<your_disks_uuid> (without the "<" and ">", of course)

You will of course need your retail disk's UUID for this. You can google how to do that.

EDIT: You might find munky's guide useful:

Hi guys!

Thanks a lot for your help.

verdant: I would realy like to install my osx from the retail dvd, therefore to use kalyway or JAS is realy the last step I want to take if everything else fails. I already downloaded a kalyway 10.5.2 image when I started trying to install osx, but haven't touched it yet.

I checked the BIOS settings you gave to me. The problem is that I can only enable or disable the JMicron controller. I can't set it to AHCI mode or anything else. And of course if I disable it, my dvd-drive won't work. All other settings are matching.

maybe I should go and buy a SATA drive, but I don't even know if it is realy the drive causing problems.. or can someone say that it is the drive for sure?

hecker: I followed your description step-by-step. the problem is, when I switch from the boot-132 cd to the retail dvd (I'm at the screen where it asks me for a two-letter hexadecimal device id) and then press enter, I get back to the darwin prompt and nothing happens.

I couldn't figure out how to get the UUID of my retail dvd, but I think I'm not yet at the point where I need the ID or am I wrong?. in munky's guide and in google I could only find the method of starting the disk util.app in osx, but since I don't have osx that might be a bit of a problem..

So if anybody has further tips to try, I'd be very glad to try your suggestions. But I think I'm going to try it with kalyway this evening.

A quick update on my situation.

I downloaded iDeneb 10.5.5 because a lot of people with jmicron controllers got it to work with this image. In the description of the torrent was written

This bootloader can:

. Install with JMicron IDE DVD

But it seems that it doesn't work for me. I get stuck after a few seconds of booting from the dvd. It says missing system config file /com.apple.boot.plist and then the dvd stops spinning and nothing happens anymore..

I think the last step I'll try before giving up is buying a SATA dvd drive and see what then happens, but I'm not very positive. We'll see. I'll keep you updated.

It seems as if you are right..

But installing kalyway from IDE DVD works or how did you do it?

Built a bootable USB flash drive from the Kalyway DVD, so I booted and installed from the flash drive, not DVD.

BTW, there is a patch on the Chameleon web site (http://chameleon [DOT] osx86 [DOT] hu) which patches Kalyway 10.5.2 to be able to install from a Jmicron IDE drive. Haven't used it, so can't comment on whether it works or not.

YOU MUST FOLLOW DIRECTIONS EXACTLY AS WRITTEN.

Find your retail disk's UUID first, then follow these directions:

For the third time (this week):

1.- Boot from your custom Boot-132 CD and press ESC once to get to the boot device selection menu.

2.- Swap your CD for the retail install DVD and wait until the lamp on your DVD-Rom goes off. Press ENTER.

2A.- Your Retail Disk should show up as the booting device now.

3.- Enter these parameters at the darwin prompt:

rd(0,1)/mach_kernel -v boot-uuid=<YOUR_INSTALL_DVD_UUID_HERE>

3A.- if you are using a modified kernel in your Boot-132, then replace mach_kernel with whatever you're using. Example: if you're using the voodoo kernel, the parameter will be rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo

4.- Partition your target drive using GUID.

5.- Once the partitioning is over, right click the newly created partition and select "Information" from the pop-up menu to get the UUID. Write down the UUID on a sheet of paper.

6.- Install OS X on your target drive and then reboot with your Boot-132 inserted.

7.- Press ESC when the Boot-132 CD is done and this time select your target partition as a boot device (Usually 80 if it is the first drive).

8.- Enter this at the darwin prompt:

rd(0,1)/mach_kernel -v boot-uuid=<YOUR_TARGET_PARTITIONS_UUID_HERE>

9.- Your system should load OS X now. Follow munky's instructions to find out how to configure the EFI bootloader.

Good luck,

Hi guys!

Thank you very much for your help guys. The problem realy was the IDE drive on the jmicron controller. Today I bought a sata dvd-drive and osx (the retail dvd by the way) installed on the first try flawlessly (well without sound etc. but that was expected). This is great!

So now I'm gonna follow munky's guide and try to get all my devices running.

I think you will hear from me again and hopefully I can help others as well.

have fun

Your audio might work if you copy the kext file into your /System/Library/Extensions folder instead of the EFI partition. It worked in my case.
