Well, in truth, technically, only QMaster quits unexpectedly on launch.

With Final Cut Pro 6, (or 5, which I also tried), it occurs once the setup screen is displayed and go through the following:

1) I choose Apple firewire NTSC

2) I get prompted that the app is unable to locate this or any other external A/V device.

3) I click continue, which would effectively set my external device setting to none

4) the application quits unexpectedly

So every time I launch Final Cut Pro 6, Apple firewire NTSC is automatically chosen for me and I go through steps 2-4. I had deleted the preference with the hope of choosing another device that may turn out differently, but as of yet, I have no luck in finding such a device. I'm at least comforted in knowing that deleting the preference file will give me the option of reselecting the device. But then again, I'd be more comforted in knowing that I can actually start work on Final Cut Pro.

By the way, I don't have any devices connected when loading Final Cut Pro and have found no reports showing that a lack of a device would give such problems. Any help on this would be appreciated and I have linked the following to show the bit of research I've done on the matter:
