I'm new at all this. I'm trying to install a 10.5.4 retail DVD using Boot-132 on my system I just built. See below for specs. When I tried to start installation (I think it was after I ejected the Boot-132 CD and inserted the 10.5.4 DVD), I got the following error message repeated several times:

EBIOS read error: Controller or device error

Block 16432736 sectors 64

Then there was some other message printed once below that. Then it went on to the gray screen with the apple, and then the Leopard background with the stars, but nothing else happened.

What do I do? I Googled that error message but couldn't find any advice that applied to me.

(Oh, and in the interests of listing any details that could possibly be relevant, I hadn't plugged in a mouse yet, just a PS2 keyboard.)

My system:

Intel DG31PR mobo (BOXDG31PR. BIOS 52)

C2D E2700

4GB Gskill DDR2 800 5-5-5-15 1.8V (ran memtest and it was good)

500GB SATA Samsung spinpoint

SATA optical drive

EVGA 8600GT 256MB

Hi, I get that error exactly four times (in a row) each time I boot the retail installation DVD. It shouldn't mean anything.

You should try plugging in a usb mouse and maybe even trying an usb keyboard as well. I believe there is a kext you need in your Boot-132 CD for PS2 functionality.

Cheers,

I ended up with the Leopard background screen, and nothing else at all. For a while there was a beachball, but then the cursor disappeared and the computer didn't sound like it was doing anything. I'll try different keyboards or mice, but I would think there would be something on the screen, that it wouldn't just go blank because I didn't hook up a mouse.

Did you enter the boot-uuid parameter correctly matching your dvd retail disk UUID?
No, I don't know what that is. I was using this guide: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=119042

which basically has me hitting "enter" a bunch.

Well, I'm trying it again and I've been staring at the Beachball of Death for over 10 minutes now.

(USB keyboard & mouse work fine; I was just mentioning that for the sake of being thorough.)

Edit: My mistake, I was using the wrong Boot-132 ISO. The DG31PR guide says to use the one with modified kexts, but I was using the original one which the Boot-132 thread said to try first. Now I'm using the one with modified kexts, and things seem to be going well.)
