iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5 GUIDE....FINALLY WORKING on Pavillion Dv5 AMD 780G SB700

I never post and this is my first time doing so; I mainly just read and learn, but I felt I should share this because from the hours and hours of searching I've done, I have yet to find someone that got OSx86 running on an HP Pavillion Dv5. a few of my specs....

HP Pavillion Dv5-1125nr

AMD Turion x64 dual core RM-72 2.1 GHz

IDT HD Audio

780G SB700 chipset

ATI Raedon HD3200 Graphics

The rest of my specs dont matter to me because these are the only things I've found that people are having issues with. I should say that while I DO have this running, it's severely crippled. Not that it runs funky or slow or crashes, but NOTHING registers correctly. Even the main drive's icon shows up as a removeable device.

USB works like a charm, but that's about it for now.

It seems to me that nobody else has gotten this far....or at least let anyone else know how they did it once they did.

If I tried to install with the DVD right from my Dv5, I kept either getting..

a Panic (CPU caller.....) nfs_init_boot failed blah blah blah....

or...

Still waiting for root device (((RANT>>>> (Skip this part if you want, but stupid people annoy me) F&%$ that message. Nobody know what it is, they just think they do! "your PS2 mouse is not working"...."insert a usb keyboard and mouse at just the right time"...."your SATA HD isnt supported".....(my personal favorite="Change your HD to master....oh you mean on my SATA HARD DRIVE in my LAPTOP? I'll get right on that sport"...."your chipset isnt supported"..."it cant find your optical drive"...."you forgot to shower"...."Mars Jupiter and Saturn arent lined up today")))

Ok..... here's the "guide"

It couldnt find my DVD drive and the Dv5 cannot boot from an external DVD drive. (I tried three different ones)

There may be better ways to overcome the problem I kept running into but good luck figuring out how to make it past it searching forums! Heres what I did...

In a nutshell....

I used another laptop (a 4 or 5 year old VAIO) to install iDeneb onto my Dv5 HD using an external USB HD enclosure, and then popped it back into my Dv5.

I could not even boot the damn install DVD on the Dv5. And yes, I tried other distributions....iATKOS v1,2 and 4, Zephyroth, Leo4All, Kalyway and iDeneb. The only one I got to work was iDeneb using the method I'm about to explain...

Install iDeneb 1.3 onto an external usb HD using a computer that you can actually boot the install DVD on (make a simple volume first...you can format it in disk utility).

when I booted OS X from the USB HD on the Dv5 after using the other laptop to install it, IT ACTUALLY STARTED! I was shocked, but once I got to the part where it said "tranfer from another mac?" with all the options, I would click "do not transfer any files" and it would just sit for a bit, then loop back to the beginning of the "first time setup".

If you can boot FROM USB on the computer you used to install OS X TO the usb drive, then reboot and go through the "first time setup" process and actually get into the OS before you try to boot with your Pavillion because in my experience, the Dv5 couldnt make it through the "first time setup" and just kept looping back to the start of it.

If you CAN'T boot from USB on the computer you used to install OS X to the USB drive, It's a little more tricky....

I used the iDeneb install DVD to boot from the USB drive by typing in "rd=diskXsX". You'll have to play around with it because Windows showed my drive as Disk 2 in DISKPART, but the Darwin Bootloader recognized it as Disk 1. I installed it onto partition #2 so Here's what I had to type once I pressed F8 to used the advanced options...

rd=disk1s2 -v

I like to push the -v just so I can see whats going on but you dont HAVE to.

Once I completed the first time setup I shut it down and hooked it USB to the Dv5 and it boots!

It WILL work if the drive is internal as well. Once my test worked, I took the drive out of the external enclosure and put it into my laptop and it worked. so I just created a partition on my laptop hard drive, took IT out and put it into the external usb enclosure and installed OS X on my main drive using the otehr computer, then just put it back in....

Again....to me this is just clearing a big hurdle, but it's not really functional...

Can't read SATA devices, optical drive doesnt work, resolution is stuck at 1024 x 768, networking doesn't work (wireless or ethernet), no audio, system profiler only reads one CPU core, and the physical drives show up as those orange icons like they are removeable disks (but there is no USB or FW symbol on the icons).

I did try and install the SB700 kexts that are floating around and whil they didnt cause any panics, they also did not change a thing. I have not tried to get anything working (audio, network, video) except for SATA as I just did this last night.

I can't promise I'll post anything significant for an update, BUT.....

if someone has some magical answer or fix to some of the problems, I will probably be much more active in "helping out" others. I just wnated to give a little hope to all the AMD Dv5 owners out there.

PS. every thing i'ver learned about computers has been picked up or self taught, so computer geeks: love you guys, feel free to correct me, prove me wrong....whatever. I'm a musician, my degree is in audio technology.

On my Dell Precision M4400 there is a bug.

It kept on getting stuck in a loop on the Transfer settings.

The reason was the install DVD in the drive!

When I take the disk out of the drive it works perfectly! With no loop.

This might explain why it works when booting from USB because the disk is not in your drive.

This is my second post. Maybe it will help someone. Dell Precision M4400 working PERFECTLY now with camera, firewire, video, sound, ethernet, usb, all good. This one really bothered me.

I have the same sound card as this model of HP. It works very good in X with the correct Kext. I found that here.

Guys with M4400 laptops - do you get CI/QE working with res switching?

have an m4400. have not gotten resolution changing, or ci/qe working. Mine still shows up as core image: software/Quartz extreme: not supported.

my gfx card is a quadro 770m. yours? have you gotten anything working on it? open gl working?

(and i guess this topic is subbing as an m4400 discussion group, no? anyway, seems like best spot to post.)

You need to install NVkush: http://diabolik1605.com/DHF/ (NVKush Installer)!

Now can someone do a NVcap dump in windows?

I tried nvinject, nvdarwin, and nvkush on 10.5.2.

what finally worked for me was the 9xxx drivers and nvdarwin on 10.5.5. but I bet nvkush would work so long as the 9xxx drivers were there. (thanks to robertoSTUDIOS )

--- does nvkush give any support for external displays? if so, I def'nly need to check that out.

Don't know if anyone else has tried, but I just moved a M4400 to 10.5.6 iDeneb v1.4 and using the included drivers, the Intel 825xx Gigabit NIC works.

Now if only I could get wireless on my Intel 5300, the touchpad to work and audio that still allows OS X86 to shutdown the computer...
