Hi All,

Forgive my newbieness if I have posted this in the wrong place, but I figured this is probably the best place for this post.

I have installed 10.5.4 retail on my box using DFE + EFI Method. Everything is working great, but my DVD player will not burn It reads fine, just no burn. In system profiler it reads:

HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22LS30:

Firmware Revision: 1.01

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)

Profile Path: None

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media:

Type: DVD+R

ID: CMC MAG M01

Blank: Yes

Erasable: No

Overwritable: Yes

Appendable: Yes

Write Speeds: 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x

But in Disk Utility the information says something different:

Name : HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22LS30

Type : Optical Device

Disk Identifier : HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22LS30

Connection Bus : ATAPI

Connection Type : Internal

Burn Support : Unsupported

Writes CD : Yes

Writes DVD : Yes

Media is present : No

Capabilities : Click for more information

Tray is open : Yes

In any case, when I try to put in a blank DVD + R into the drive, it reads it as 0kb free space, and if I try to burn and iso to it, diskutility says "not enough free space" or something like that.

It shows as /dev/disk3 in terminal when I have nonblank media in the drive.

I have googled far and wide and searched this site like crazy, but the only information I found was wrt patchburn for 10.4.x Everyone seems to think this doesn't happen anymore in 10.5.x

Please oh wise sages of insanelymac, educate me.

Cheers,

peakz

So the story gets more interesting...I have now installed Toast 9 Titanium and it can burn no problems. I'm not super concerned that DiskUtility wont recognize it now that I can burn with something else, but I'd still like to understand whats going on.

I have the same device and I can burn DVDs with Finder and Toast 9 without any problems.

Are you guys using the drive in SATA mode or did you set your BIOS to IDE emulation? This can really make a difference!

Also: make sure you are using AHCI & native mode for SATA devices!

I had the same trouble with a GH22NS30. Toast would burn dvd and CD, Finder would burn CD but not DVD. I tried a firmware update, different motherboards and 3 different OSXs, made no difference. I ended up in trading them (I bought 3 of them ;)) in for NS10 model. Odd problem.
