Darrarski
I've a problem booting a iDeneb 1.3 10.5.5 Installation DVD on one of my PCs. I'm getting this at the console: ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-securityAppleVIAATADriver: VIA 8237 SATA (CMD 0xff00, CIR 0xfe00, IRQ 22, BM 0xfb00) Still waiting for a root device Still waiting for a root device Still waiting for a root device ... The "AppleVIAATADriver" line won't appear when I switch SATA mode to AHCI in BIOS, it appears only in Native IDE mode. The DVD disc is free of errors, because I've alredy used it to install OSx86 on other PC without problems. Here is my PC specification: processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane (MMX, MMX+, 3DNow!, 3DNow!+, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, AMD64) mainboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 with latest BIOS v. Darrarski
I've just tried to install Kalyway 10.5.2 Intel/AMD on this PC, and it also hangs in the same step, after "ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-security", but any other message appears. I wonder if there is a working dist for my hardware? Anyone has successfully installed OSx86 on the PC with AMD770 chipset mainboard? Darrarski
I've tried to install Leo4All v5 AMD with the same results. Next, I have plugged non-sata hdd to my mainboard, but the problem still existed. I've tried to disable mainboard features such USB controller, FW controller, etc. but the "Still waiting for a root device" message appears every time I try to boot dvd with OSx86. My DVD-ROM is connected to mainboad via PATA cable, so it couldn't be a problem connected with SATA driver. I have found a dvd disc with some kind of OSx86 distribution in my drawer. It has a label "Leopard 10.5.1 amd" but I don't know which distro exactly it is (but it is old for sure). This is the only one OSx86 dvd that I can run on my PC, but installer is very slow and there is no option to run Disc Utility, so I can't prepare proper partitions for installation. Over all, this means that my hardware is in some way "compatible" and it can run at least MacOSX installer. Could you help me with choosing a proper dist for my hardware? (the full specification is on the first post in this topic) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/137794-installation-dvd-stops-at-still-waiting-for-a-root-device/#findComment-976345 Share on other sites
Darrarski
I found a solution for "Still waiting..." message that works for me. As I'm using motherboard with AMD770 & SB600 chipset, I have to use ATI SB600 fix. It's integrated with LawlessPPC, and this is the only one release that I can install on my PC. Unfortunately after installation I have to copy patched kext into Leopard partition myself (using MacDrive on Windows). After that, the system is starting, but my PS2 keyboard isn't working, so I can't even use Single User Mode to apply other kext patches for my graphic card etc. Summarizing: when considering OSx86 compatibility, my PC suck :-) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/137794-installation-dvd-stops-at-still-waiting-for-a-root-device/#findComment-979603 Share on other sites

Man.. I have the same problem! The story.. Before i hade my MA770, i had a Asus M2N-E, tried to install with Leo4all and installation went just fine untill reboot.. "still waiting for root device" Then i tried to update my bios! reboot and bios fail to load.. (never happend before) the board was dead Then buy a new board (MA770 DS3) And i just tried and see if this would boot up in my previous osx86 installation, and it worked! But my luck sucks so i accidently destroyd a partition and couldn't boot in osx anymore.. "Ntldr missing" ?? And now i'm back at zero I was thinking that the "still waiting for root device" can be solved if install with a DVD-ROM S-ATA instaed of P-ATA ?? Help would be nice, thanks! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mobo: Gigabyte MA770 DS3 CPU: AMD X2 3800+ GPU: Nvidia Geforce 6800 256 MB HD: 2x Samsung S-ATAII Drives DVD-RW: Nec ND3500A 2GB Standard DDR2 (667) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/137794-installation-dvd-stops-at-still-waiting-for-a-root-device/#findComment-980905 Share on other sites
Darrarski
I think that "ntldr missing" message is related with Windows, search it on google. Could you tell me if you already run Leopard on your system (Gigabyte MA770 DS3) and if it worked at least smoothly? I know that you can use LawlessPPC and should install on your system without a problem, but for me keyboard isn't working, it takes 15 minutes to load the system and there are no working divers for my graphic card. So it's useless, but it's only one release that I installed on my GA-MA770-DS3. I think there are currently no proper kext for this mainboard to use OSx86. Yes Ntldr is one of the boot files for windows. Very strange this problem come up when i deleted a mac partition. Yes, i installed it with the asus board first, then boot upp successfully with (MA770 DS3) (with "AHCI" (or what it is called) enabled in bios. My keybord and mouse worked (wireless usb & ps2). Also networkcard, usb, firewire. My graphicscard (GF 6800 256Mb) worked only with 1024x768 res and no QE. But that could be fixed with a kekt i am sure of. The soundcard did not work directly, but same there with a working kekt i believe ? I'm downloading LawlessPPC and see.. Guess we have to wait for an solution, or have to buy an intel board/cpu Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/137794-installation-dvd-stops-at-still-waiting-for-a-root-device/#findComment-982038 Share on other sites

Darrarski
I've downloaded Leo4All 10.5.2 v3 iso + PPF v3, merged, and slowly burned. Unfortunately, installer hangs on on something like this: Dec 8 09:30:10 localhost kexd[47]: root filesystem is read-only: skipping kernel link data generationDec 8 09:30:12 localhost diskarbitratland[44]: unable to mount /dev/disk1s1 (status code 0x00000047). knorrhane
I had the same problem, but when I made an empty partition with unallocated space on my primary hard drive the installation started.. I have a GA-73PVM S3H motherboard with an IDE drive and DVD on the same cable. It won't boot after install though, think it's something with the kernel.. But try creating an empty partition on your primary hard drive and see if that does the trick! CarbonR
i was using the leo4all AMD one from the demon with fork site. I got the same error ie unable to mount /dev/disk0s1. Inorder just wait. mayb it will take 10-20minutes but the process with continue and the setup with start. also once the setup starts, the window with choose your destination will empty. So to the menu on top and select the 'Disk Utility'. Select your harddrive, right click and press and erase and choose (MAC OSX extended journeled) for the format and let it finish. after the formating verfiy the disk and close the disk utility and back the first windows select this drive and your good to go with the installation.
