Three of my friends bought Macs computers for school, all three almost right before Leopard was released. Theyve got a Mac Book, Mac Book Pro and a white iMac. All Intels, and they all have Tiger 10.4.10 (or the latest version), I think the oldest one is now 15 months old. Is there a way to upgrade Tiger to Leopard, or do they have to each buy their own Leopard copy (which is, what, $130 each?) and install it? They want to play Spore (which needs Leopard) and other softwares that runs only on Leo, but they sure dont want to spend the whole amount for an OS upgrade.

At the limit, can we take a vanilla Leopard from the net and install it right on their machines, without Apple knowing? I know they arent asking for serial numbers on installations, so Im wondering if we can install Leopard that way safely, with all features (upgrades included) still working perfectly.

Thanks!

No, Apple won't "detect" it or anything. There's no serial or anything, really to prevent you from pirating OS X.

Just push command-q when prompted to register your mac after Leopard is installed - skip that step.
