strange. I had a PCI firewire card in which worked fine, or so it seemed. Activity monitor wasn't showing any odd CPU load and the firewire transfer speeds were decent. but once I pulled the card, the xbench scores went up into the 60s. I now have quicktime back!

you need to replace you kernel with the 10.4.4 kernel patched with maxxuss base patch only. Thats what i did with similiar setup and i got an instant improvement

thanks for all of your help. i still want to get a better xbench core, maybe i will try 10.4.6 and see if that helps.

 

p.s is it true that a pentium d is only 32bit? i have windows x64 running on mine so surly it cant be?

The Pentium D has the 64bit extensions. OSX86 probably doesn't use them yet, but your windows will.

 

A couple of other things to remember:

 

1) The CPU test of xbench is only a measure of 1 core

2) To effectively test your CPU, you should run both the CPU and the Thread test, as the thread test will also test both cores.

 

The iMac G5 is a single core CPU, and will probably match your single core test fairly closely, but when you combine the thread test, your dual core cpu will be much faster then the single core G5.

I don't know of any test that will test both cores similar to the CPU test, but for comparison, here are a few xBench numbers that I have been able to get from various machines.

 

AMD-64 3000+ CPU=57.80 Thread=65.48

AMD-64 3400+ CPU=72.38 Thread=71.96

 

Notice how all the thread tests are very similar to the CPU tests, could it be that there is only 1 CPU to run the thread tests on, probably, speculation only, I have no proof.

 

Mac Mini CoreDuo 1.66 CPU=64.37 Thread=166.43

iMac 17" CoreDuo 1.83 CPU=70.43 Thread=183.11

 

Here the CPUs are about the same speed as the AMDs above, yet the thread tests finish about 2.5x as fast.

 

I'm not sure how accurate xBench is, but it should be relative given the x86 instruction set in common and the same test being run. However overall system responsiveness is a combination of the above + memory + video + disk IO speed.

Here are my numbers for the only 2 Pentium Ds I have.

 

PD 920 2.8 CPU=62.06 Thread=157.29

PD 830 3.0 CPU=68.68 Thread=169.73

 

You can compare these numbers with the AMDs and the DuoCores, above.

 

Note that the Pentium D processors are Pentium 4 based with the deep pipelines and can take many cycles to execute some instructions. They are a little slower then the AMDs listed above, but make up for it with the Dual Cores and easily trounce the AMDs in the Thread test, but I would expect an AMD X2 to be faster. I don't have any X2s to test with, so that's a guess.

 

However the CoreDuos are a different architecture, can do more per cycle, and are really fast, as you can see by the numbers. The 1.66 beats the 2.8 Pentium D 920, and the 1.83 beats the 3.0 Pentium D 830.

 

Again, that's just raw cpu horsepower. Other things like video, memory, and disk should not be discounted when it comes to overall experience.

Also, how does you machine FEEL? Try running Aperture 1.1, iWork, Garaband 1.1 , Safari, etc.

 

My machine has a score of 68 also, but I feels as responsive as my Dual Ghz G5.

 

Also try downloading HeliosLan Test. Use it to test out your hard drive speed and compare it to a G5 if you have access to one.

 

Really, I am sure the Xbench software is not designed for Hackintoshes. Hence the low scores. Also, try comparing Apples to Apples or Oranges to Oranges like a

 

GMA 900 Desktop to another GMA 900 Desktop.
