Voltic
So I just picked up my iPhone 3G about a month ago from Softbank... was locked into a contract before and they're finicky about upgrades. I jailbroke my phone a couple days after I bought it, mostly because I hate locked down systems, but really for no other reason at the time. If not for that reason though, here are the two reasons I would have done it anyway. PDANet by June Fabrics A little while back, there was a program released on the App Store called Netshare, which later was removed due to takedown requests from AT&T. This is essentially the same program, which allows you to "tether" your iPhone to be used as a modem. It's actually even quite simple to use... you create an ad-hoc wireless connection on your PC, connect to it using your iPhone, then select "WiFi Router On" in PDANet. That's it, done! After jailbreaking your phone, PDANet can be found through the Cydia package manager. Please note that while using PDANet, your iPhone will be active on both WiFi and 3G data services, so your battery will tank hard - plug it in! Fring Now I do realize that Fring is an App Store application, but the true potential of Fring isn't available to you until you have jailbroken. For those of you unfamiliar, Fring is probably the best messaging and VOIP app available for the iPhone. Not only does it support Skype, but also SIP, MSN, ICQ, Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo! and Twitter. Because of pressure by wireless carriers on Apple, the App Store has a limited version of Fring which comes with no 3G capability for VOIP calls. As you might be aware, 3G is more than capable of handling the throughput required for a VOIP call... the carriers simply don't like it because they would lose out on talk time charges. You can find a link to the modified version [REMOVED]. macgirl
Please, make you and us a favor, READ the rules. You cant post link to that kind of files. Anyway google can find that file for anyone and the board shouldn't be involved. And finally, there is no need to use the modified version, there is an App that anyone can download with Cydia, VOIPover3G, that can make any app thinks it is on WiFi, included the appstore, it uses a plist file that anyone can modify to permit other applications use 3G as WiFi. By default Appstore and Fring are enabled.
