This + Boot-132 / Monky bootloader?

It costs $13.40 and I think gets around problem with usb flash drives.

I know there has already been a lot of talk about using Monky's solution ala boot-132 (and chameleon project) and doing it as a separate partition on a harddrive... But at the end of the day it will still be "hacky" and scare people away. On the other hand, if one creates a disk image to to write to a mini sata drive, you can package it as a simple soluition the same way EFIX is.

This works just fine, but still won't boot the retail dvd, only hard drive/usb partitions.

It's actually possible to put a stripped-down boot dvd image on a small usb stick, which can be booted & scripted to launch the installer on the os x dvd, which combined with boot-132 &/or syslinux would then give you a graphical bootloader, the option of running the install from DVD, or of booting the install, all unmodified. It would be a cheat, but it would work, and I don't see why an ide-attached variant wouldn't.
