Has anyone here got a Dell Dimension 5100 pc with the following spec that has managed to get OSX 10.4.5 or 10.4.4 working?

When I go through the installation during the "configuring installation" part it stops and states there was an error. States I need to restart the pc and try installation again. Have tryed several times but get same error message. Doesn't state what the problem is. Not sure if there is a way for me to find out what the problem was in some logs.

Anyone gone through something similar???

My config is:

Dell Dimension 5100

Intel P4 HT 3.4ghz,

Windows XP Home SP2,

Western Digital 250GB Sata Hard drive (there is already 100GB of unpartitioned space in for other reasons) and Seagate 160GB ATA,

1GB ram,

Video and audio are integrated Intel ones

(PS. how can i read more detailed specs like my motherboard no.?)

Could you tell us what steps you've taken to get this far?

I had a similar problem on my Inspiron 9100. I ended up installing 10.4.3 and then using Myzar's 10.4.5 DVD to upgrade. Other than sorting the screen resolution it all worked fine.

Sure,

i firstly search for "Mac OS X 10.4.4/5 osx86 Patched Bootable DVD" in Pirate Bay and download it. The exact name is "Mac OS X 10.4.4/5 osx86 Patched Bootable DVD".

Its a 4.35GB iso file so it's gona take a while.

I got the info to download that here:

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=10614

But basically you don't need to view the page as long as you can find the download.

Then I followed the following guide. I didn’t need to use Partition Magic as I already had unpartitioned space on my 250Gb drive. Most people don’t. So you need to know how to use Partition Magic. I never needed to so don’t still.

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=13014

Shortened the quote a little below:

1. Have Partition Magic (version 8 prefered)

2. have space as much as you can I allocated 60GB to OS X 20GB for win XP and 500GB for XP as well but OS X reads (read only :( )NTFS just fine so 500GB is readable by both OS's

3.1st run partition magic and create (or resize) as much free space as you can after your windows partition and before any extended partition (thus creating 2 primary partitions) it is Crucial that the allocated non-formated space be AFTER the windows partition make sure the space is marked as Unallocated space

4. press apply and if required reboot to make the changes.

5. when done boot normally and click start then run type in "diskpart" (no quotes) press enter

6. type "list disk" press enter

7. type "select disk 0" press enter (if you are installing to same drive as windows)

8. type "list part" press enter you will notice you do not see the empty space you made in Partition magic

9. type "create partition primary id=af" then press enter

10. type "list part" press enter now you will see the the new partition OS X will be installed on.

11. type "exit" press enter

Burn the "MacOSX_10.4.4DVD patched 10.4.4.iso" with Nero choose burn image in nero from the recorder menu (I used Nero 7.0.1.4) (I tried Alcohol 120% but it said it wouldn't fit although Nero didn't care)

boot off the DVD..

once you get to the part where OS X asks where you want to install you must launch the Disk Utility to erase the partition you created earlier

once done OS X installs fine

not on the release i have it has an AMD enabler and booting failed if you didn't customize the install and uncheck the AMD enabler.

once installed enjoy. the Darwin Boot Loader defaults to OSX but if a key is pressed within 10 seconds it lets you boot to what ever drive Windows is on.

That’s it basically. I got into problems during the installation part. The DVD would load but the installation wouldn’t begin. And although we got a load of :graduated: here, it seem NO ONE IS WILLING TO HELP.

How i feel as time goes on :(<_<:gathering: :angry2:

Hope the info provided helps you though.

All the best. :thumbsup_anim:

g_gonzo99 Reading your reply again i'm not sure what problem you're having.

If you have managed to make it work on 10.4.5.

Can you please tell me where you got the 10.4.3 and Myzar's 10.4.5 DVD and what you did to make it work. Thanks.

Cool, that's the same 10.4.5 disk I have. It installed perfectly on my main machine (see sig), but that's to be expected as it was purpose built. When I tried to install it on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 9100) I had various problems. First time, it appeared to install ok but when I rebooted I go the HFS+ Filesystem error message and nothing I tried fixed it. So I deleted the partition and started from scratch and this time go the same error as you seem to have:

I tried deleting and recreating the partition but got the same error twice more. So at this point I used my 10.4.3 install DVD. I got this from a P2P network and patched using the instructions I found here:

http://www.profit42.com/guides.php?id=1

10.4.3 installed with no problems, and then I used the 10.4.5 disk to upgrade the installation, which also worked. Everything works fine except my screen resolution but as I have a laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 I just have to live with that I think.

I think there are plenty of people here who are willing to help, but if someone doesn't have experience with the system you're using they probabaly just can't help. I've only noticed one other person in the forums using a Dimension 5100.

I think that's answered above, but ask if you want to know more.

10.4.3 disk came from edonkey and patched following the instructions at the link I've included above. Myzar's 10.4.5 DVD came via Pirate's Bay and seems to be the same one you're using.

Getting OSX running on anything other than a purpose built machine (or a Mac! :D ) can be a frustrating process, but its worth it in the end. Keep at it, and good luck.

My Inspiron 5100 is running 10.4.5 smoothly. The only issues are the missing battery status (System profiler show me the battery status, but don't display on the clock bar), and the unnacelerated video. (ATI Radeon 7500).

I use the Myz patched disk to install natively.

Maybe if you give it a try, the Myz disk can solve your problem.

The original poster's problem is simply the result of the recordable DVD used. Try burning the original ISO image onto a DVD-RW at 1x speed (this is important) and try again -- it'll work fine. The 5100's internal DVD drive is picky about certain DVDs, especially DVD-R's burned at high speeds.
