Occasional problem with DVD-ROM

I installed an PIDE DVD+/-RW NEC ND-3550A. OS X recognizes it find, and I've burned discs successfully with Toast 7. However, on occasion (whenever I try to burn with Liquid CD, when I tried to rip a disc using iTunes and then cancelled out), it becomes un-ejectable, and any program that tries to access it hangs and becomes unkillable (even with Force Quit).

 

Anyone seen anything similar, know how to solve?

 

I'm running 10.4.5, with ATA and network drivers from 10.4.4 (or is it 10.4.3?)
