Italia64
I'm looking for an alternative to the Powerbook G4 12", which is a bit heavy for its size and slow, and of course won't run XP like a hackbook. So I need a subnotebook obviously, for travel and I've searched the forums until my fingers hurt. I want to keep the cost way down, so am looking at used/refurb models, say below $750, ideally around $650. The Lenovo X61 appears to be great, however it isn't a widescreen and the graphics are only 1024x768 and I want 1200 x 800. The HP 2510P might work, but the processor is a bit slow at 1.2Ghz; I want to run Leopard. Any suggestions? Synaesthesia
Wow, the HP 2510P with SSD would just be the Perfect leopard subnotebook. The 1.2ghz Core 2 Duo CPU will perform really nicely with lots of RAM + ssd.(1.8" hard drive is slow) Other than that, they re quite expensive option though. Other than that the Lenovo 3000 V200 should work well in Leopard, methinks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/121512-advice-on-12-or-maybe-13-widescreen-notebook/#findComment-859763 Share on other sites
Italia64
The 2510P can be bought as a refurb for about $650. But I haven't seen a lot of reporting here from people who have gotten it working well. Synaesthesia
Just checked out the new Lenovo X200, a very nice laptop. I don't think OS X will work that well though. The Dell D430 and Lenovo 3000 V200 remain the best choices Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/121512-advice-on-12-or-maybe-13-widescreen-notebook/#findComment-860514 Share on other sites
Italia64
Thanks for pointing out the HD speed on the HP, I had missed that in the specs; great computer, but the 4200 rpm 1.8" PATA probably not the best idea. The Dell D430 is nice, but even refurbs are $900, and it is only a 1.2Ghz processor; used may be the only way to get one affordable. The Lenovo weights about 4lbs, 1200x800, 12.1", reasonably quick processor speeds, CD drive onboard, it might be the winner if I could find a used/refurb for a reasonable price. For 13", the Dell m1330 is the way to go from what I've read. Synaesthesia
Yeah, the m1330 is pretty cool. Just like a Macbook, only a little lighter. Seems like you can make up your own mind, you have all the info, all the facts...Just a few thoughts: - A 1.2ghz Core 2 Duo is faster than you think; OS X works very well on slower CPU's anyway, as long as you have plenty of RAM. It's still a seriously fast chip! Way faster than a G4, or Atom, and those work just fine! Of course it depends on what you need, or want. - Hard drive speed can make a bigger perceptible difference in daily tasks than CPU speed. However you have noted this! - With Laptops, it's all about trade-offs. The 12" models with the 1.2ghz chips are not just a little smaller than the 13". They are significantly smaller and lighter. That extra pound counts a lot for many people. Again, it depends on what you need, or want. Remember we're talking about an Ultra Low Voltage chip that uses 10W - which would mean great battery life. That all being said, the Dell XPS M1330 is an awesome awesome lappy.
