Installed Kalyway 10.5.2, the Kalyway 10.5.3 update, then normal updates to 10.5.4. Everything works fine except for Firewire audio (and unfortunately, music is why I built this box).

In Logic Express, with multiple tracks, I get a "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI" error and then the sync for the MIDI tracks goes all to heck. This is driving me nutz. Meanwhile, playing 2-track audio via iTunes or Pandora radio, etc. works fine except that CPU meters seems to run a bit high. Onboard audio on the MB works fine on normal 2-track audio but gives the same error (above) under Logic on multi-tracks.

This is on a system with Asus P5K-VM w/E7200 2.53MHz, 8600GT, and Pyro PCI 64R2 Firewire Card (with TI chip), with a Presonus Firebox as the external soundcard.

Any ideas on what's causing this problem, or have I missed something necessary to get core audio fully working? CPU meters don't peg anywhere near max when this happens in Logic Exp.... Any help appreciated!

Finally found a solution to this:

Replacing the 9.4.0 kernel with ToH 9.2 Speedstep kernel solves the "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI" problem.

Update: The StageXNU 9.4.0 kernel with Intel SpeedStep support + sleep support solves the firewire audio problem and sleep appears to work, and it also seems to sightly improve performance compared with the 9.2.0 Speedstep kernel.

Does anybody know if this is a OSX86 issue or is it an issue with the Leopard OS?

I am experiencing issues with Firewire on both a Hackintosh and a Mac Mini both running Leopard 10.5.4

A browse of apple support sites shows that there appears to be major issues with Firewire on Leopard.

All I can say in my experience over (about 18 months) with both the Firebox (audio) and several different drives in MacAlley firewire enclosures I haven't had any sort of firewire problems under either Tiger or Leopard, on real Macs which includes a Macbook C2D and a couple of G4 Powermacs. People using other devices may have problems however... personally, I've had none.

I was having numerous issues with the onboard Firewire chip, and so I sourced out a nice cheap PCI one with Texas Instruments chip instead. Since then, it's been rock solid with Logic and my Firebox. You can find the url to the card I picked up in my signature.
