I ran a search, and a few topics came up but nothing either resolved or not responded to.

Steps Taken:

1. Insert DVD

2. Press F8 for boot menu

3. Choose DVD-ROM drive

4. Press enter for boot prompt

5. Type -v <enter>

6. Loads to the point of:

ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure.

Then it has an error (I don't remember exact) saying it's waiting for a boot device or something.

Help!

Bump for some help.

You will not get much help UNLESS you give FULL relevant details of your system including MOBO model and its chipset, CPU, HDD (SATA or PATA), DVDRW (SATA or PATA), RAM installed, multi-booting (if so with what OS's) etc......check out the signatures of other forum members to see what I mean...... :)

+1 for haxi

Also for the most part you can disregard the firewire security errors. I believe the real issue you are having is with the second error you noted. I suspect this it is "Still Waiting for Root Device"

As the search function here is not always up to snuff, i suggest doing a google site search. To do this you type the following in a google search bar.

site:insanelymac.com still waiting for root device

OK as far as MOBO and CPU go.....For Intel CPU and nForce chipset MOBOs check out the excellent threads by Mysticus C* http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=87901

and http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=109102

If you follow Mysticus C*'s guides carefully they should get you going OK...his guides and updater packages have got me up to running 10.5.4 on a 650i MOBO with a Q6600..... :)

If you need further clarification on each step read the Kalyway 10.5.2 (IMHO the preferred choice because of giving no SUIDs errors) and iATKOSv2.0i 10.5.2 install guides in my blog......other forum readers and members have posted saying that it helped them install OS X successfully.....both Kalyway 10.5.2 (see here posts by icemantaz) and iATKOS v2.0i 10.5.2 (see posts here on pages 81 and 82 by sQuadron)......

BUT a key point as you will see when reading the thread and my blog will be whether or not you have a SATA or PATA DVDRW as the former may cause problems.... Also how many HDDs are installed.....are they SATA or PATA HDDs or a mix...... :)

I'll check out those links. Thank you. As far as components go, I normally have 2 SATA drives for Windows, but I only hooked up one Seagate 160GB SATA drive when I tried an install (I swear I have a couple terabytes of HD laying around, hah) and again, I usually have 2 DVD drives but only had one hooked up during the install, and it's IDE.

I'm not sure if this is a lost cause or not.

Last night I tried using an IDE drive (as suggested in the linked posts) set to SLAVE and my DVD drive set to MASTER and I still got the errors. Please don't hate me, but I don't honestly have time to scour the 86 pages of posts in that thing. I went over everything that Mysticus C* wrote, however. I certainly want this working, but it's just not worth my effort to look through all that. If anyone has any quick ideas, please let me know, if not, I'll keep using Windows.

Thanks all.

You do not have to scour 86 pages of posts......read POSTS 1 and 2 CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY.....and my blog too as it may help you as it has others.....BUT consider the time it took Mysticus C* to compile all the information in those 2 posts....likewise myself writing my blog....the conclusion is NO PAIN NO GAIN.....;)

Sorry but nobody will do ALL THE WORK FOR YOU....only you can decide how much you want to experience the joys of OS X versus the time spent learning how to do it...... :)

I did read his 2 posts, and none of it applies to my issue or hardware. Everything he posts about is non-relevant. I'll read over your blog now.

You what...... ?

Mysticus C*'s thread is for Intel CPU + nForce chipset MOBOs which is what you have:

Asus P5N-D MOBO has

- Intel® Core™2 Quad / Core™2 Extreme / Core™2 Duo / Pentium® Extreme / Pentium® D / Pentium® 4 Processors

- NVIDIA® 750i SLI chipset

- ASUS EPU (Energy Processing Unit)

- ASUS Precision Tweaker 2

- Support PCIe2.0 Dual x16 SLI

- ASUS Q-Shield

Indeed, however his recommendations on hardware do not apply to me. I don't have a SATA DVD-ROM drive, I don't have a PS/2 keyboard/mouse, my BIOS settings are fine, I haven't gotten to install point where my graphics card/LAN are important, nor the RAM, and I'm getting errors prior to any graphical installation. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Good, neither do I

My BIOS settings are fine,

So OS X should install OK......

I haven't gotten to install point where my graphics card/LAN are important, nor the RAM, and I'm getting errors prior to any graphical installation.

ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure.

This does not prevent OS X running.....I see it on booting successfully and my Firewireports work...... :(

Then it has an error (I don't remember exact) saying it's waiting for a boot device or something.

This is an error.....do you mean "Still waiting for boot device"......do you have a SATA hard drive(s)....?

Perhaps I'm missing something.

If only the following error message appears

"Still waiting for root device"

then it means your SATA HDD is not being recognised due to a missing DEVICE ID.....and/or to a similar unknown incompatibility as with the SATA DVDRW.......

then you are, as from Post 2 in Mysticus C*'s thread

5-b-) If it just says "Still waiting for root device" it is your SATA HDD, is not recognized due to missing DEV ICE id or incompatibility as the SATA DVD drive. Fixing this involves two installations and some editing, no direct solution unless you inject edited nforceata driver to the DVD.

Correct, I am getting the "Still waiting for root device", however as I already posted, I tried to install last night using a DVD-ROM jumpered to Master and an IDE HDD set to Slave and get the same error message, same place. I normally use SATA drives for my Windows computer, which after seeing that might be a problem, I tried an IDE drive laying around, again, same result unfortunately.

What are your BIOS settings?......

I need to know these to try and help you.... :(

Have you got HDD SMART option enabled in BIOS?....If so, disable it.....tell me what happens when you try to boot OS X on the HDD......

I'm at work right now, I'll post it up tonight on what it's all set to. I'll also set HDD SMART to diabled, not sure what it is now. Thanks for all your help haxi. :(

OK....that may help when you get to installing and booting from the HDD but from your first post at present you appear to have problems booting from the OS X Install DVD itself.....am I right on this?.....please clarify.

Also what OS X DVD Installer are you using.....it will help a lot to know.

If it is the DVD you cannot boot from, then at the Boot: prompt type

"cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v"

If that does not work then try

"cpus=1 maxmem=2048 platform=X86PC -v"

I am able to boot from the DVD, get the message saying for boot options to press F8, which I do, then at the boot prompt type "-v" and enter. It scrolls through many things, and halts at the bottom giving the "still waiting for root device" error. I am using the Kalyway 10.5.2 iso. Forgive me, but I'm not entirely sure if I am booting from the DVD or not, I believe I am. Should I still try the boot prompt sequences you suggested?

Yes, if you have set your BIOS Boot Menu to boot from CD/DVD rather a hard drive then yes, try the suggested boot prompt sequences....

haxi, thank you! I was able to install and boot up by way of your boot line sequence. It seems to be running fine, but the LAN, Graphics Card, and Audio is not working. I did some searches, but it all seems so over my head. Man, and I thought I was an okay computer guy.

Audio: Onboard (Asus P5N-D)

LAN: Onboard

Graphics: nVidia GeForce 7900 GT OC

Any ideas? I know there is info on the forums, but reading it seems so confusing, as people are saying one thing works, then doesn't, or sort of works. Meh. : \

Sorry, more detail, by the graphics not working I mean I have no support for any other resolutions than 1024x768, which sucks on a widescreen monitor. :)

By the way, I heard the onboard lan doesn't work, but that someone came out with a working patch for it? I looked through the post but all they said was "I'm not posting install notes, search the forum". I did, but didn't find anything really what I guess I'm looking for.

Glad I was able to get you up and running.....

Read my Kalyway 10.5.2 / iATKOS v2.0i Installation blog SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY.....it explains that onboard LAN does not work with OS X on nForce chipset MOBOs.....also that you need to install the correct video and audio driver kexts for your system.....

How much RAM does your video card have......? You need this information to install the right GFX driver......

Your MOBO has Realtek ALC883 8-Channel HDA codec .... so you should try installing the two kexts here http://www.mediafire.com/?j0lnmnwwgms using Kext Helper b7, and in audio and MIDI configuration select the aggregate fix to enable 5.1 channel, and you may get surround sound....... :P

Thank you. I'll try those kext for the audio and see what happens. I'm not sure on the video card, I think it's 256MB but I'll have to confirm tonight. I'll do a search for more info on what LAN cards work, I found it at one point but I'll scour again.
