I figured I might as well dedicate an entire thread for it; I'm doing various experiments to make it run in some way under OSX.

I know it runs smoothly in Bootcamp, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who hates switching OSs and having all of their other apps inaccessible during their time in Winbloze.

--- Cider ---

I love Cider. Too bad I don't know enough of it. HGL won't launch and all my attempts to make it run under Cider have failed.

--- Crossover 7.0 ---

Crossover doesn't recognize the CD so, for the moment, multi-player is the only option. I managed to get as far as the menu screen. Cursor isn't responsive but the keyboard input seem to work. All in window mode too, doesn't seem to want to go into fullscreen at all.

Same results in v7.1

Priority: Getting the cursor to work.

--- VMware Fusion ---

I got it to run under VMware Fusion. The cursor is "ok" but doesn't feel responsive enough. With hardly any graphical glitches, I couldn't get over 15-20fps no matter what I did; which is somewhat of a disappointment. I'd consider it fully playable if it wasn't so unstable too. Everything looks ok until roughly 20min of play and then the graphics (not to mention the entire system - including OSX) goes K-put.

Priority: None - VMware Fusion sucks! Even if I did get it to be stable (which doesn't seem to be likely), it's still got poor performance. The only only I'd try would be to install DirectX on top of it (like I did with Parallels) and see what it does.

--- Parallels Desktop 3.0 ---

I've actually managed to make it run and play under Parallels:

With a few graphical glitches, I'd say it's fully playable. The game does not detect all of your hardware capabilities (due to the virtualization of Parallels) so the settings are low by default. A trip to the option screen !@#$s it up to a point where I had to revert to a previous Snapshot (a save "checkpoint" in the virtualization) to get it working again.

I'll do more testing on the settings.

The patches required for online play screws it up badly. Controls and UI work fine, seems like the issue is graphic-oriented. Considering it runs reasonably well in single-player (using an older version of the game), I'm convinced that I can get the same results somehow...

Priority: Being able to play online.

So far, Crossover and Parallels are pretty close at getting it right. I'll keep you updated.

I got rid of VMware Fusion (I tried 1 game and it performed very badly, GTA San Andreas) and now I have Parallels, I would also assume it would play very badly for me in this also. I just tried Gmod and CS:S in Parallels and I had bad FPS. My windows is fully updated and I have the most up to date Parallels.

With your attempts with Cider, did u manage to mess with the config file or anything? and also what version did u use?

I got it to run under VMware Fusion (I had to borrow VMware Fusion from a relative).

I used the 1430 build of Cider. I did mess around with the config file but not extensively (aka: didn't know what I was doing). All I do know is that you need to link Cider app to the appropriate .EXE (as opposed to the launcher).

O...well the only things I managed to do with Cider is pretty much get a cool splash image appear on startup, and how to customize it so it doesnt even look like a Cider port.

When u used cider did u manage to load the launcher at all?

One of the unique traits of Cider is that it can only runs apps that run in fullscreen. You can play a game in "window mode" but it's handled by Cider/OSX. The application itself, still thinks that it's in fullscreen.

Splash screens such as the HGL's Launcher uses Windows' windows and, ergo, cannot be launched by Cider. So, when you link the .exe to Cider, you have to link the .exe that the launcher calls.

So far, the Icon will bounce once on the Dock and then disappear. So there's something missing...
