OzSpeedway
Hi all I another thread I indicated that I bought a whole bunch of stuff for my new machine, amongst it an ASUS P5K vanilla motherboard. I have had no end of problems getting this thing to play ball (cannot get audio working no matter what I do!!) so I have decided to bite the bullet and buy another motherboard that there is known and good install threads for. I am looking at a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R and was wanting to know if I would need to do a complete reinstall from the ground up. Just wanted to check before I went down the full customisation route and set this machine up for my day-to-day use... Thanks in advance Cheers Bruce Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119080-would-i-need-to-reinstall/ Share on other sites
Gujal
Have you tried both AD1988B rev3 Installer & AD1988B rev4 Installer from Taruga's site on your Asus P5K? OzSpeedway
Have you tried both AD1988B rev3 Installer & AD1988B rev4 Installer from Taruga's site on your Asus P5K? Ah, no I haven't but will. Thanks for the link. However, this MB is giving me pains in other areas. Currently my SATA DVD keeps disappearing and requires a reboot. I will feel alot more comfortable with an install that has good thread support. I found 3 threads this morning giving details of installs on a P35-DS3L which I will also consider. I am not lazy by any means and will go find things that I need to, but this board doesn't have a lot of support on here unlike it's brothers so the pain of figuring out what to search on is taxing I will just chalk this one up to not knowing enough about the modern motherboards and will not / never again / assume that just because the model number *sounds* similar it means it will work as the others do. Update: I just tried these installers and while the Audio now appears in profiler: Device ID: 0x1043829F Audio ID: 12 Available Devices: there are no devices hence no sound (still). No devices could also mean I have no idea what I am doing and need to do yet more searching. Cheers Bruce Hi there, According to Asus your MOBO has the following: JMicron® JMB363 PATA and SATA controller so you need to set to it to AHCI mode in BIOS if that is an option, which I presume you have.... Also depending on your BIOS features Execute Disable Bit [Enabled] ACPI APIC Support [Enabled] ACPI Suspend Mode [s3] or [s1] or [s1 and S3] Realtek ALC 883, 8 -Channel High-Definition Audio CODEC so you should try installing the two kexts here http://www.mediafire.com/?j0lnmnwwgms using Kext Helper b7, and in audio and MIDI configuration select the aggregate fix to enable 5.1 channel, and you may get surround sound....... dnjmarlboro
Currently my SATA DVD keeps disappearing and requires a reboot. Forget about the Jmicron. Just plug your SATA DVD to one of the ICH9 Ports (in Bios "Enhanced IDE Mode") and use this driver http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=88335 (Never had any Problems with any SATA Port) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119080-would-i-need-to-reinstall/#findComment-844285 Share on other sites

Oops...well not really. I flashed my bios with P5KR bios to get the ICH9R option of AHCI so I could run that after reading many posts about IDE issues. That is also why I bought a SATA DVD as I only had IDE burners on hand. I do currently have the JMicron port set to IDE as I have a WD 80GB IDE FAT32 drive on it for storage. I suspect there could be alot of "newbie knows nothing" syndrome going on here. What I may do as a last ditch attempt to "save" this motherboard is go back to scratch (read reflash the BIOS with the original) and utilise everything I know now to reinstall. I am currently downloading the Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update which I was going to use for my new motherboard (used the one by Mysticus available on the forum for this install), I already have a Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD and know that if I use a vanilla kernel I can update to 10.5.4 from Apple's site. dnjmarlboro
Yeah, flash the original Bios and use the driver posted. Some friends of mine have had Bluescreens under Windows with P5KR Bios using an Sata DVD Rom! OzSpeedway
OK, just did a quick reboot to check the options and with P5KR I have IDE / RAID / AHCI. Previously with P5K bios I only had IDE. Not sure where I should be looking to see if I can set IDE Enhanced mode anywhere but I am off to RTFM. Update: Cancel that, found it.... OzSpeedway
Just did a reboot after installing the ALC 883 things and while the Profiler shows "No inbuilt audio" there is actually sound. Didn't know until I went into prefs and saw there was some outputs. But something weird is still going on as I have sound on videos played through VLC but not Quicktime. I don't think I will continue with this current install, I'll blow it away and start again. Hi haxi I am just about to blow everything away and reinstall to see if I keep this motherboard. I don't quite understand what you are referring to in the bold text above. Could you explain it in newby-ish terms please... Cheers Bruce The best way is to explain is to point you to the 5.1 surround sound tutorial here..... But focus on basics first when reinstalling......i.e. 2 channel sound etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119080-would-i-need-to-reinstall/#findComment-845726 Share on other sites

I am just now deciding on the order of things to do. I have the 5.2 Kalyway DVD, the 5.3 Kalyway Combo Update, the fix to do to use Enhanced IDE instead of AHCI, the network driver to install, the appropriate bits to get my 8600GT 512Mb working and finally 883 sound. If all this works and stays working, the MB will survive. If there are issues or something goes flaky then Thurs or Fri I am off to get a Gigabyte MB that there are plenty of install topics for. Off I go to copy off what I want to keep and start my reinstall..... OzSpeedway
Thanks again haxi I understand that no PC installation is ever 100%. Over the years I doubt if I have ever used a PC that didn't have some quirks. I would be quite happy with an install that didn't keep changing - for example, sound keeps going, drives don't automagjically disappear etc etc. I have infact started my little journey. I resized my main partition and created 2 more of 50Gb each - one for test installs one for anything else. I have already installed the 5.2 Kalyway DVD and actually have sound OOB, no network (expected) and basic video (expected). I am currently applying the 5.3 combo update to see what happens next. OzSpeedway
Just wondering.... How long does the combo update update take? Mine seems to be stuck after 20 mins it has moved about 10%. I was wondering if anyone has an MD5 hash for the files as I just don't trust torrents - gimme rapidshare any day! Anyway, if someone could assist, I would appreciate it. OzSpeedway
Saved my life again haxi, very much appreciated. My internet connection peak time (now) is throttled at the moment to 64k (yuk!) from 2Mbit ADSL 2+ so these files are scheduled to download during my off peak starting at my 3am (2 hours away). I'll continue the install tomorrow after they are down and done..... Thanks again, your assistance has been great! OzSpeedway
Alrighty, Initial test install has gone well except for a stupid mistake by me. I installed Kalyway 5.2 DVD, Kalyway 5.3 ComboUpdate, Apple 10.5.4 Delta Update, used NVInstaller and ended up with a system that has sound (from the default Kalyway install - nothing to do on my part) and video utilising my EN8600GT. I screwed up the network install but I think that should be OK next time round. I managed to download the Kalyway update via torrent again and it was clean. I do have the Mysticus one as well but have not tried it. Oh, and I also installed the IDE fix for this board and that seems to be working well too. The only hassle I had was reflashing my board with P5K bios but fixed that by using an engineers version of the flash utility. One strange thing I have found out though.... when I originally used NVInstaller my monitor was connected to the VGA port of the 8600. I decided to connect it to the DVI port with a DVI-VGA connector and now Profiler says that Quartz Extreme is not supported. It was working when plugged into the VGA port though. I don't know if it has to do with me changing what I was connected to *after* the install but I needed to see if there was any output on the DVI port so when I get my flat panel monitor later this year, everything works as expected. Currently I only have a 19" Samtron 96P connected... Anyway, I am just double checking everything before I blow away my main install and do another based on this test. So far, so good. verdant
@ OzSpeedway Hi Bruce, glad things are going better for you now...... A number of people have found video worked "better" via VGA than via DVI for their systems.......you need to ensure that video is being ouput properly to the GFX card ports.......check in the forums........perhaps you could set it up for dual displays now.....ready for later.....
