desau13
I have 10.5.2 running fine -- I want to update to 10.5.4. I think I understand how, but I want to be safe. So I cloned my 10.5.2 disk (using Disk Utility / Restore function). I now have a secondary disk that I'd like to upgrade which contains my cloned 10.5.2 install. However, I can't boot the cloned disk. If I try to boot off the cloned disk (using the BIOS/select boot device, or GRUB/boot/chainloader), it simply doesn't boot .. no error message. Does cloning the disk using Disk Utility install a bootloader? If not, is there a way to make the cloned disk boot? markzipan
you can add a bootloader using OSX86Tools use the 'Install EFI/run FDISK' Chameleon is pretty nice if you still have problems - follow these instructions to clone Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/118840-how-to-boot-a-cloned-disk/#findComment-843315 Share on other sites
Bob Ajob
Is it possible to completely install, clone and restore a fully patched, perfect OSx86 Leopard 10.5.4 drive image using just the OSX Leopard retail DVD and a bootable, USB 8GB pendrive that contains the following items? Boot-132 'loader' image (for booting the retail Leopard DVD) Compressed DMG image of a fully patched and perfectly working OSx86 10.5.4 installation Chameleon installer .pkg file (to install bootloader on cloned disks) OSx86Tools, PC EFI, OS 10.5.4 patch, kernels, essential driver .kexts, etc. I was thinking that in future, when I finish patching a 10.5.4 retail install, it might be quicker to create a cloned hard disk backup this way rather than do a total reinstall from scratch and then try recovering from an old time machine backup that might not be from the same version. This might also be useful for making a generic, bootable 'Live' OSx86tools .ISO (for either DVD or 8GB USB pendrive). I think the 8 easy steps from building an original hackintosh through to cloning it onto another machine with the same hardware are roughly - Use Boot-132 USB drive to boot and install retail Leopard 10.5 disk to first drive Reboot into safe mode, update to 10.5.4 from apple (or use standalone 10.5.4 update package on disk) Patch system with relevant system .kexts and Chameoleon .pkg to enable gfx and hard disk boot Once finally happy with 10.5.4 perfect install, use Boot-132 USB again to boot from Leopard retail DVD again Use Disk Utility to make a new .DMG disk image of your 10.5.4 perfect installation onto the 8GB USB drive Plug USB drive into clone machine, boot retail disk and load Disk Utility, restore to second new hard disk Run Chameleon .pkg to make your cloned second disk bootable Fire up your cloned hardware fully patched and ready to go! (edit) Apparently CloneTool2 (coming soon from people who made CloneTool Hatchery H1) can also do this. If the above method is at all possible (and probably quite easy to use if it is) then please can someone let us know and also maybe consider updating the instructions to include this new option and how to create the perfect initial bootable USB pendrive, thanks.
