refurbished ones are usually ones that were returned for exchanges, defective, or otherwise non-operational ipods that have been returned and repaired (refurbished) to a satisfactory working condition. Generally, a refurbished item has been tested more than a brand new item and rarely breaks down again. Although a refurb item can have a shorter warranty it usually has had all it's components tested and replaced if they were defective and often you are getting something that may be more reliable than a brand new one.

Also refurbished ipods do not get the free engraving that the brand new ones receive should you choose that option.
