Hi all,

I have searched high and low and read lots of tutorials, tried both iATKOS and Kalyway 10.5.2 but I just can't get past the "Still waiting for root device" message during the initial install with my Vista 64 based PC running a GB-EP45-DS4P & Q9450.

One thing I am really confused about is how to do the install when I do not want OX-S in a partition on the HDD that Vista boots from. I have a 750Gb Samsung Spinpoint and I have made a new empty, unformatted partition out of the last 200GB for OS-X but since it is totally unformatted I am wondering if the installer can't see any partitions on the whole system to use? Or is that not relevant until the GUI based installer starts (when you use the Disk Utility to format it)?

(Somewhere I saw someone suggesting that the partition be formatted with FAT32 but this can't be done via Vista (AFAIK) so I'd have to remove the drive and do it in another PC running XP.... but I want to avoid this if possible.)

Ok, so in my system I have 3 SATA HDDs and one SATA DVD Writer as follows:

C: - 74GB Raptor with Vista 64 Home Premium installed (NTFS)

D: - 300GB Seagate 7200.10 (NTFS)

E: - 500GB NTFS partition on brand new Samsung Spinpoint 750GB drive

F: - Pioneer DVR-215

So, as I mentioned above, the other 210-odd GB on the 750GB drive is reserved for 10.5.2 but it is currently unformatted.

I saw someone mention AHCI so I switched that on in the BIOS ("SATA RAID/AHCI Mode") but it made no difference to the install - and Vista would not boot so I had change the BIOS setting back to "Disabled".

I have also tried turning Firewire off in the BIOS as I was getting this error "Firewire (OHCI) TI ID 8024 PCIU now active, GUID 0029684800001fd0; max speed s400. ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure".... but the installer still stops in the same place every time so I doubt it was this causing the problem either.

My graphics card is a Gigabyte 9600GT (passively cooled) and I have 4GB of Geil Value DDR800 RAM, an older Fusion Live T tuner and the Gigabyte eSata panel installed.... so I can't see too much there that should be giving problems.

I get the feeling I'm missing something really basic and it might have something to do with the fact all my devices are SATA or that it can't see a partition to install onto.... does this sound right to anyone? Or maybe it is some BIOs setting (like AHCI) that need to be done...?

I've read about 10 tutorials and countless forum posts but nothing I've tried has worked so am hoping someone here can help.

Thanks,

Mike

(Wish my first post here was reporting good news but alas, it's not!)

EDIT:

A bit more info... immediately before I get the "Still waiting for root device" I get this message: "Extension "rtl.r1000.nic.ext" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernal and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style.".... could this have anything to do with it?

To see an image of what the install does (and where it stops), see the attached image.

The screen shot you link to is not available. Attach the screenshot to your post not a link which does not work.

Anyway 2 things from what can be deciphered in your post

1. First remove 2GB RAM for the install, you can install later after you have it running successfully (JMicron issue)

2. Your CPU is 45nm which may have issues with the default kernel and PC-EFIv8 in Kalyway 10.5.2. You can get rid of the PC-EFIv8 problem by patching the iso with Zef's Chameleon PPF Patch. As for the kernel, try others on the disc such as netkas or modbin. I am not sure of Kalyway 10.5.2, but Leo4allv3 does come with multiple kernels to avoid this problem.

Thanks for the reply Gujal.

Sorry about the image - I have uploaded it now. Can you see anything obvious in there?

I will try removing 2GB of the RAM as you recommend and if that makes no difference I'll experiment with the Leo4allV3's various kernals... although I should try the Chameleon PPF Patch first of all I guess.

The screen shot mostly points to the SATA Controller. I think your motherboard is based on ICH10 and you may need SATA set to AHCI. Vista should have no issues with AHCI as it is supported natively (unlike XP)

Other option is to get Leo4allv3 which has a modified AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext which supports ICHx chipsets in IDE mode

If you get Leo4allv3, then also get Leo4allv3 10.5.3 PPF patch by JaS. This patches the Leo4allv3 image with 10.5.3 update, Chameleon Bootloader, enhanced SSE2 support and additional drivers.

One thing I cant confirm is GeForce9xxx support

Thanks Gujal - I really appreciate your advice.

The only problem with switching to AHCI is when I do it I get a BSOD when trying to boot into Vista and the DVD drive didn't boot either.... maybe when I changed it to AHCI it changed the order back to the HDD. I also saw someone here say you use AHCI until Leopard is installed and then change it back to the normal non-AHCI mode - not sure how true that is but I may have to try it if nothing else works.

Anyway, it sounds like the Leo4allv3 with those patches is the one I should concentrate on. Didn't have a chance to play with it (erm, Leopard I mean!) today but will get back to it this week hopefully. Gotta keep fingers crossed it will support the 9600GT, I know some people have had problems with 8800GT's so it will be interesting to see.

What part of NZ are you in? (Just out of interest as I'm a kiwi too as you can probably tell by my nickname).
