WTFever
I've been reading(as a guest on many sites) until my eyes started to bleed, and now I'm more confused than when I started. So I'll ask a few simple questions and hope for simple answers lol. My current setup: XFX Nforce 680i LT SLI, Q6600, 4GB ram, 2x500gb HDD's in RAID 0 (connected SATA), XFX 8600gt 512mb, DVD burner(IDE)....oh, and an old floppy I had to add to install RAID drivers for XP. I'm dual booting Vista Ultimate(1st partition) and XP pro(2nd), and have 3 other various partitions for storage. Question 1: Is my hardware compatible to install OSX? I read an HCL but it was rather outdated and had more anecdotal info than hard current facts. Someone should update the wiki. A lot of links in it are dead. The vid card and cpu were listed but the mobo wasn't. However I've read several threads using the same chipset. Searching here only lead to a few threads without anyone saying if the mobo will work or not. Question 2: Can I triple boot Vista, XP, and OSX?....and maybe quad-boot later adding Mint Linux Many of the multi-boot threads/guides mention several combinations, but none specifically mention those three. I doubt it would be a problem, but I'd rather ask than lose access to what I have currently. Question 3: Can OSX be installed on an external HDD? I have a sh!tload of old drives I use for USB external backup. Sticking OSX on an external might save me headaches IF there is a way to boot it. I installed Mint Linux 5 on one of them, but haven't been able to get it to boot yet. I'm mainly concerned with question 1 since that is the BIG question lol. TIA for any help. BTW, and I'm not sucking up.....I joined this site because it seemed the friendliest of all the sites I have read on the past few days. citta.ventosa
I've been reading(as a guest on many sites) until my eyes started to bleed, and now I'm more confused than when I started. Short answer: Yes. I had the same problem and searched the wiki but found nothing on the xfx 680i LT. I've successfully installed Leopard 10.5.2 on the XFX 680i LT with the Q6600 and 4GB RAM using 2 WD SATA drives and a SATA DVD/CD combo. Leo4All v3 disk was the one that worked for me. On the boot screen, I entered "maxmem=2048 cpus=1" as the install disc doesn't boot if more than 1 core is enabled and the install hangs with more than 4GB of RAM. Plug in those values and it should work. Under the Customise menu, I believe I selected "Kernel 9.2.0 sleep", "old Nforce drivers", "Azalea Audio", and "Zydas USB" as I have a Belkin wireless usb adapter. I didn't install any Geforce drivers as I have a 9600GT (unsupported as of yet) and installing the Geforce kexts tended to crash on bootup. You may or may not have sucess with the NVinject drivers, I couldn't say. Generally it's better to install as few of the drivers as possible during install and load them up once you get a working OSX installation. I'm far from an expert at this, but after much trial and error, these were the steps I followed to get a working Leopard install. Now I have all 4 cores running, 4GB RAM recognised, Audio and wireless internet working. It would be great to get some QE/CI going, but I may sell the 9600GT and pick up an 8800GT to fix this issue. Hope that helps. Question 2: Can I triple boot Vista, XP, and OSX?....and maybe quad-boot later adding Mint Linux I had success with EasyBCD dual booting Vista and OSX. I don't see why triple booting would be a problem. Search the site for threads. WTFever
Thank you for our help I have a copy of Kaly, but I'll grab the version you had success with and have a go at it. citta.ventosa
No problem. I tried Kalyway and iAtkos first but neither worked for me. I think it was an issue with my SATA drives because I kept getting the "Still waiting for root device" error. I believe Kalyway and iAtkos suggest that you perform the install with IDE drives, which wasn't an option for me. Leo4All seemed to have better support for SATA drives on the install disk, and booted right up after I put in those boot flags. Side note: I noticed that iAtkos v4i has just been released with improved SATA support so that could be worth trying if Leo4All doesn't do the trick for you.
