The only thing you can do is search for a way to stop processes you don't want to use, like Spotlight, Time Machine, Dashboard, etc to get some memory and processor cycles back. Deactivating Font Antialiasing and even using less colors/resolution helps, I know 'caue I've been using 10.4 on a PowerMac G3 300MHZ for many years.
