andsteele
I have just finished my first year in college. I'm on a summer break now and I managed to get a 9 - 5 job so I can earn some money during the holidays. I have two gadgets in mind I want to get. - Canon EOS 20D SLR - Powerbook G4 I know the Powerbook is old but I've never owned a Mac before and I think it might suit my needs. I have dabbled with osx86 with limited success. Although I never got it working well enough to use as a primary operating system, I knew that OS X was the way to go. I will mainly be using it to surf the web and with my iPod. I would also be using Photoshop CS3, iLife and maybe some stuff in Final Cut. The Powerbook I would be purchasing would be the 17" model, with a 1.67GHz G4 processor. I would max out the RAM to 2GB if it hadn't been already. I would also upgrade it to Leopard if it wasn't already running it. Some people have said I should get the regular Macbook, but I don't really like the design and I find it too small. I do not have the money to get a Macbook Pro before you say thats what I should get. Does anyone else own a similar Powerbook? How is it? I'd like you own personal views. e-rick
Powerbook is still very good, but only just.. if you can get it really cheap it could be a good deal, but please keep in mind that (as far as I know) apple will ditch ppc support in SnowLeo.. so to be future-proof a intel-mac is the way to go... maybe a second-hand macbook pro? you'll pay $200/$300 more but I would say it's worth it. Yeaah, I will definately get a Macbook Pro if I can afford it, but I think I might have to settle for a G4. adrock42
I love my 12inch powerbook. I still use it for class and meetings. they dent and smudge really easily. Alas, its not worth much so I probably wont sell it, but you could get one on ebay for less then $500.A macbook or a macbook pro would probably be a better choice, although I always choose the better camera over the better computer. One thing to keep in mind - The Powerbook G4, being a PPC, will not just let you install Leopard on it without some hacks. At least that's been my experience. I have both a MacBook Pro and an old G4. Synaesthesia
Leopard will work fine as long as it's 833mhz or more - Snow Leopard won't work. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/115080-going-to-buy-a-powerbook-g4/#findComment-1189126 Share on other sites
