Ok , im kinda new at the whole OSX on pc thing, so please bear with me!

First and for most here are my computer specs

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2GHz

Ram: 2 Gig

Westen Digital IDE HDD

Nvidia Gforce 7100 256 MBRam

TSSTcorp cd/dvdw IDE

Ive tried ever disc out there to install with no luck

The kalyway disc gets an error about the firewire and then stalls on waiting for root device

the ATKOS disc goes to the Grey apple screen and just hangs there and eventully a circle with a dash through apprears , i assume that is not good.

Any suggestions???

Am i a hopeless cause??

Your ECS motherboard has an nForce 4 chipset (northbridge), which means you need a patched kext to see the HDD. I would try Leo4All distribution and then select the appropriate chipset during installation. (I am not even sure that Leo4All has an option for nForce 4 chipset support. But it certainly supports more systems than the other two.) It does not look like the HDD interface problem. It is a chipset problem, I believe. I would not try ASUS motherboard because it has VIA chipset.

You're getting "Still waiting for root device" while you're booting from the installation DVD? (or have you already installed and you get the message booting from your HD?) For AMD installs, nForce4 chipsets seem to have pretty good success generally. The error you're getting normally means the chipset isn't supported properly... (improper .kexts ("drivers") on whatever disk you're booting from - the bootloader starts with generic support and then tries to load "real drivers". If it can't, or tries to use the wrong ones, you drives "disappear"...)

Strange thing here is most AMD releases have better support for IDE drives than SATA usually (never used kalyway though). But, some have reported that how their IDE drives are "pinned" can sometimes make a difference. It's never been a problem for me ( I use Zephyroth's releases ), but some have to re-arrange their IDE drives. You might try running the DVD as "Master" on your secondary IDE connector for example (or changing up the "Master" / "Slave" order, or switching to "Cable Select" or vice-versa) The "medevil nforce" .kexts are very good now and most people have very good luck with nforce4 chipsets...

For AMD, Zephyroth or Leo4All are the more popular dists.

Oh, as for the external USB HD: Ya - it'll work. That's my preferred method installing on new hardware to see if OSx86 will work or not. That's how I got OSx86 up and running on a new (unsupported) 780G MB with a quad-core Phenom... Going a step further: people even use external DVD drives on "problem machines" to get around chipset problems.
