Jeepmb
I am sorry i am a big computer noob. Everything about installing the kalyway 10.5.1 makes sense except the option for Vanilla kernel(s). What the heck is this and what does it do to the installation. How do i know if i should use it? Tim Smart
A vanilla kernel is a kernel straight from Apple, in other words it is not modified at all. The kernel is the "core" of the Operating system. turgo
Taken from here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_(computer_science) The kernel is the central component of most computer operating systems (OS). Its responsibilities include managing the system's resources (the communication between hardware and software components). Vanilla means untouched, unmodified or original. In this case the vanilla kernel is same kernel that and apple machine would use in its OS. The benifit would be that you could download any updates for the OSX without the need for a patched update basicly making you Hackontosh that much more offical. All that is required is that you have a processor with the sse3 instruction set. If you're unsure you can use a tool like CPUZ to find out. Both newer amds and intel processors have the set but I recomend you have what the kernal was made for. Intels core processor series. Like a core 2 duo or quad 2 core. I think for amds you may have to do a little somthing extra to get the vanilla kernel working but I could be worng. I hope this helps. Jeepmb
Yah thanks that last post really helped. I am running a Pentium 4 w/HT and CPUZ says I support SSE3 so i guess i will try to use that in the install.
