My Mac Minis Seagate hard drive stopped booting mac earlier this week and now after calling Seagate for support they send me to Apple who in turn says that there is no replacement coverage or recall although after a quick google search many people have had this problem and Apple at one point was said to be looking into the issue.

What should I do? I bought my Mini in August 2006 and in a month my AppleCare eligibility will be up. I'm strapped for cash and was hoping to shoot for a MacBook for my birthday, although that MSI Wind is looking nicer by the minute...

Is AppleCare worth it just to replace the hard drive? Would they replace it under AppleCare?

P.S. Has anyone noticed Apple support has been outsourced? The apple rep I spoke with had a very thick accent and wasn't very helpful...

Edit: (CAN A MODERATOR PLEASE MOVE THIS THREAD. It somehow got posted under Applications :( )

Depending how "techie" you are, I would reccomend just buying a replacement drive and switching it out yourself. You can probably snag a replacement drive (possibly more storage space than your current one) for less than the cost of an Applecare plan.

Especially since you plan on upgrading to a new Mac shortly.

If your not that techincal, don't worry. You can find instructions on Mac Mini dissassembly just by doing a Google search.

I tried once to wedge it open with a putty knife but had no luck on one of the corners, I was too afraid of breaking something. And the only reason I wouldnt just do it myself is because the optical drive only likes some CDs (mostly ones with less data on them) and I was thinking about maybe replacing that. I love my mini, but its power, or slight sluggishness has been annoyance since leopard. Maybe a faster drive would help.

How safe is it to install a 7200 rpm drive? I know the mini runs with a 5400 and I wouldnt want any heat issues.
