RoyaRandom
I'm about to go on a 3 months vacation and is trying to find a way to transport my desktop computer safely. Can I just put it in a box wrap it with bubble bags and blankets? Maybe the addition of clothes to fill the empty spaces within the box to prevent movement? My worry is the static factor. Can the computer parts burn due to the static that is created by the blankets and clothes friction? Should I take out the parts? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. By the way, I'm sorry if I placed this thread in the wrong section. If so, please move this thread to the right section. U.C.
Cant burn with static, if they are in a case. Clothes etc should be fine. You can disassemble it, wrap all parts in Anti-Static Bags and then stuff them in clothes too. Might just be easier to buy a Wind and load OSX on it though http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...view=getnewpost Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/114139-how-to-transport-a-desktop/#findComment-808479 Share on other sites
RoyaRandom
What is the use of the Anti-Static bags? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/114139-how-to-transport-a-desktop/#findComment-808596 Share on other sites
tungtung
Well anti-static bags as the name suggest are those plastic bags (usually silver-ish coloured bags) that almost every computer part come with. They are just to protect those components from statics. If you still have the box that you bought your case initially, they should provide enough protection. The biggest problem in transporting today's desktop system are usually two things. First it's the harddrives, even though most modern drives are built well enough to sustain quite a degree of shocks (especially during non operational mode), therefore I would suggest removing the drive from the case and put them in a box of their own (inside an anti-static bag), which has the proper protection, refer to those packaging guides provided by some manufacturer. I believe Seagate has a good information on how to do this if you go to their website and look under their RMA guidelines. Second problem is usually with regard to the coolers installed on the system. Most enthusiast nowadays use those exotic coolers, which are quite honestly can be a big hazard to the other components when they are not secured properly. Even if they are secured properly, a significant amount of shock might cause that cooler to become loose and damaging other components. So if you do have those after market coolers (especially those big tower coolers), removing them from the system might be a good idea. This also applies if you install other cooler on your graphic cards. Other than those two things I honestly can't think of any other "danger" to watch out when packing your computer. I mean I've seen how Dell, HP and Apple package their system for delivery, and they usually just secure them in the box with heavy duty styrofoams, and so far I haven't seen any of their system come "in pieces", I've seen scratches and stuff on the case, but nothing worse. You should also mark the box as computer parts or some other marking so that the baggage handlers will handle them with care. Quite honestly for a 3 month vacation, taking your desktop along for the ride sounds a bit excessive. I mean desktop are ... well ... meant to be sitting near your desk and not going along with your travel and stuff. But that's just my suggestion ... honestly I would rather either buy a cheap laptop and copy the necessary data onto it, or better yet just don't take any ... I mean it's a vacation anyway ... RoyaRandom
My biggest concern is the risk of my computer burning on board. Can the lack of an anti-static bag cause the desktop to burn or set on fire?
