So after months (years) of following osx86 etc, I think i'm finally going to pull the trigger and build one. This will be my first new home computer since my pre-K laptop I'm currently on (celeron-m, 1.5 ghz). Here are the specs

Intel Q6600

4 GB Corsair ddr 800 (2x2gb)

Pioneer DVR-215DBK (20x burner)

EVGA 512-P2-N757-TR GeForce 8600 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16

Antec Earthwatts 430watt

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L

all inside of a Sunbeam Freezing-Storm IC-FS-BK Black Steel ATX

+ Whatever sata drive I find to boot from so I can leave my media drive untouched

OSX will be used mostly for general productivity and Final Cut. Windows will be for gaming and windows specific software I have. I figure the 8600 gt should be a fair comprimise between a decent gaming card and decent rendering in final cut.

This all comes to $607 Shipped after rebate ($682 before).

From what I've read, the Gigabyte is supported pretty well and the geforces go off without a hitch (save having to inject).

Is there anything I'm missing?

I would ditch the Gigabyte board and get a ABIT IP35-Pro. Sure it's a bit more money but it's a solid board and it can support 4gb+ on Os X. Where as last I checked the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L only allows 3456gbs of ram. I'm just biased though. Otherwise, your picks seem pretty solid. Good Luck with it!

OK, I don't how many times I have said it, but what really matters is the mobo.

I can't advice you, because I built my box one year ago, I used a Bad Axe 2 (great mobo, but not the latest), and I haven't bothered ever since. However search the wiki/forum, and you'll find out which mobo works best. You want something which supports Penryn, even if you are planning to use a Q6600 (but I strongly recommend a 12MB cache Penryn, you will notice the difference in speed and CPU temperature).

Even better, wait if you can for the first Nehalem compatible mobos to become available, everybody will want to upgrade to Nehalem once they are available at a reasonable price (I expect next year).

Ok I think i got it figured out.. I was looking at a p5kc, decided against it, and the IP35 Pro, as well as the DS4, but i think i'm going to go with the ds3l and get a wireless card and a firewire card.

I've been going back and forth between so many boards that I can't keep them straight anymore, but I know the ds3l is pretty well supported, i've read nothing of the memory limit, and its pretty inexpensive. I think I'm going to go with the above setup and add the T-LINK wireless adapter and enjoy my sunday

hope it all works well :trumpet:

This looks like a good combination, Mephistol. However, I told some of my friends to get the GA-P35-DS3L and there is one little problem. The built-in ethernet works, but it doesnt play nice with Bonjour or AFP. I highly suggest getting an Ethernet pci card to accompany this setup. Here is a link to a $7.99 gigabit ethernet card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16833180026

Just letting you know, EVERY mobo has its quirks (issues). So don't be discouraged if a mobo isn't the mythical 100% compatible.

i'm not going to be using the onboard ethernet.. I have only one other computer since the hurricane and its the {censored} laptop i'm currently on. I'm going to be networked by the asus pci wifi card I bought along with the board to connect my laptop, xbox, and q6600.

and I guess if I'm limited to a little under 4 gig, I'm limited to a little under 4 gig, it's still cheaper than a mac pro and if i find i need more than 3.5 or so gigs of ram I can always buy a new board.. the ds3l is only around $80 so it won't be that much lost
