Questions in bold

Having used most my tech budget for the summer on a turntable computer interface (serato) I didn't realize that my current PPC powered macs were too slow to run the damn thing. I was looking into pystar as they arent that far from where I live, but I thought, "I could do this myself". So I began to research this project. I figured it would give me some good info on the mechanics of osx and I'm cheep. Im not so much of a osx noob as a pc noob. I had put together a bunch of computers but really was only succesful with windoze as an os.

The 1st install.

I would not just download a disk and install it. No matter what i was going to use my own patched dvd. We had bought the 3 seat Leo for cheep on edu discount so i had the licence as was ready to go. I had an older pc that I built for my wife (P4D 2.8 820 + p5pe-vm + Geforce 5200vga) that I gave the first good install to. I used brazilmac but I could not get the boot correct.

The 2nd install.

A couple of weeks later I hadent looked at the machine because I went on vacation. I had finally got paid for a gig and had some extra cash so I desided to upgrade.

mobo - dg31pr $89

proc - Intel Core 2 duo e4600 $129

2 gigs of ram $50

PNY 8800gt 512 $149

I kept with my dvd ethic but I found the Combined_Post_patch_v0.1 which rocks by the way. Everything went pretty smoothly. I did software update for everything but the os updates, and i did those by downloading the dmg. Cool! 10.5.3. but leopard graphics update wouldnt go in.

When trying to install Leopard Graphics Update I get "your system does not meet the specifications". Is this included in 10.5.3? The only thing I can think of is the drive is ide not sata. Any Clues? My 8800gt seems like its running hot and the system profiler states 640 mb not 512 mb. Not a big deal cause quartz works and everything else is working well. I might just get a cooler for it.

So I start patching for my vid card. I ended up using gfx strings. It seemed way easier. I also used the alc888audio for my audio.

Everything works really well. Better then my Dual 1.8 G5. Running CS3 with out issue, FCPStudio, and best of all Serato with the Video plug in. Rosetta seems to work with Office 2004. Midi works so far.

Some bolt on fun.

I got the cheep Dynex 3 slot firewire card from Bestbuy. Which works out of the box. I also got the big zalman fan because I wanted to keep everything a little cooler. Lastly I bought VMware on edu discount (sweeeeeet).

I installed VMware and it hosed my network. I freaked out and did a time machine restore. I later found out I should not have blocked the network comm with Little Snitch. Woops. btw, time Machine works out of the box.

Some weirdness

About this mac and system profiler are way off. I keep reading that this is cosmetic, but about this mac says 4ghs, and tempmonitor says the proc has an upper limit of 4 ghz. Is it over clocking? It was running really hot, like 140f. I expect these temps from my g5, but not a little dual core.

Temps in general are off. When I shut the computer down and enter BIOS it says 67c on the CPU, but temperature monitor says 37c+37c. Who should I belive?!?!

Lastly, everything is off in the system profiler, the pcwiz OSx86 utility didnt work. I have tryed editing localizabel.strings, and the aboutthismac file. I always end up with the string instead of the actual data. Like "PROCESSOR_NAME" instead of core2duo. Anyone got a good fix for this?

I'd like to add the following:

firwire 800 and esata. I was thinking more of the dynex stuff

some ports on the front panel for firewire, sound, ect.

Some games. Very sad to see SimCity 4 doesnt work on intel 8(.

Fans, maybe a new box to support a {censored} load of em.

Any Suggestions?

Xbench Score is 178.3

Geekbench is somewhere in the 2000s

I'd like to thank the moderators on this board and the entire project for getting me here and anyone who cares to answer the questions above. Noobs make the fan base.
