Have 10.4.4 running nicely here, i have an 875 based intel board on a s478 3.2g cpu. Rather than ditching the board, cpu, ram, nvidia card and getting a D945 GMA950 board, i'm wanting to try dropping in an AGP card that works well.

How bad is this mouse tearing thing? Couldn't see any screenshots of it anywhere...

Is there any AGP card on the market that gives full acceleration without tearing? (don't mind if i have to edit things to get it happening and muck around)

Also, if i edit the com.apple.boot.plist file to set a different resolution, can a game change the resolution in order to play? or by doing this with an ATI card, does this effectively mean i cannot play games as they can't change the resolution?

Thanks a million guys! :)

EDIT:

By 'best card' i mean most compatible whilst running accelerated, and hopefully quicker than GMA950 too. I do not mean best card as in the fastest thing on the market at any price point :happymac:

I've got a 9800SE, and with the Mousepose fix the tearing if pretty much gone. The only problem is games, they cannot change the resolution so fullscreen games are usually a smaller box at the resolution the game wants in the lower left with nothing on the rest of the screen. I've edited my game preferences to do windowed or to 1280x1024 (my native res). But... and this is a big one... Half the games I've tested will 'destory' the mouse cursor, so it's just a line of noise across the screen, after you exit. Castle Wolf doesn't but Call of Duty does for example. Postal 2 will also do it since I can't get that one working in windowed mode.

Basically, all the cards are screwed up because of a problem loading the ATI display kext that allows resolution change and hardware accelerated mouse. Your best bet is to get that 9600 cheap and just deal with the issues like most of us are. You still get QE and Core Image, so apps run great. And I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a fix, it looks like some of this stuff is tied into PCI-E, EFI, and a lack of support for other hardware in the drivers themselves.

Thanks a million, Bug!

You've answered exactly what i wanted to know, but couldn't find anywhere. I guessed the games might be an issue, but that's ok, i'll deal with it. I have an overclocked eMac anyway, and i can always use a PC for games. This is mainly for general mac internet usage etc, and music production software. I will put up with this for awhile and then most probably invest in a MacTowerPro. (whatever they'll be called)

If someone gets a PCI-E solution working, i might then go GMA950 with view of adding a PCI-E later but for now this shall suffice. I just don't feel like spending $$$ replacing ram/cpu/mobo to end up with the same thing, but with on board graphics and no benefit except acceleration in OSX.

Thanks for making the choice easier! :)

You need to know some games won't work at all since some cannot change the resolution.

For instance, it seems only Diablo II and StarCraft won't work since they are old games and doesn't even support high resolutions so that's pretty much why it doesn't work I guess since every new game I tried works 100%.
