I was wondering if there are any solutions for the random crashes most users experience when using more than 2gb of RAM. I bought 4gb to allow lots of breathing room on a multi-user machine with lots of applications running, but was getting the usual crashes. So lately I have been using the maxmem=2048, and I thought 2gb may be ok for now... but it seems I'm frequently running out of RAM. Plus it's a pain in the ass to have to make sure I type that on every reboot. I tried editing the default boot flags, but that made my system unbootable.

Even if currently 2gb is "enough," it's not going to be the case for much longer. The OS and apps (especially the pro apps I use often) are going to need ever-increasing amounts of RAM. Is there any sort of patch in the works to solve this issue? Does anyone even know what is causing these symptoms, and have some sort of idea how it might be repaired?

Many thanks,

Canadrian

4GB working just fine here, with a 64-bit kernel (kabylkernel). Mobo is Asus P5B-VM mATX. No bootflags.

Note: Switching on PAE made both Windows and OS X unstable, plus Windows didn't see more than 2GB.

With PAE off, OS X is stable, and Windows (32-bit) sees 2.75GB.

Here are my specs:

Kingston - ValueRAM 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM

Intel - Desktop Board DG31PR w/ DualDDR2 800, Video, Audio, Gigabit Lan, PCI-E x16

Intel - Core™2 Duo Processor E4500 2.2GHz w/ 2MB Cache

Not sure whether I have PAE and whether it's on. BIOS setting I take it? I am running Kalyway 10.5.1 upgraded to 10.5.2 using an installer I found out about on this site.

well, i'm running Leo on an AMD rig... but check your BIOS for AHCI setting on Sata HDD, enable it if it's not... and delete any JMicron Kexts you got on Extensions folder

canadrian, I had this problem in the past too, but it have been solved with a firmware upgrade on my BIOS (at that time, Windows Vista wouldn't even boot..)

On Intel website I just got the latest BIOS and applied the update.. It may solve your problem too, but be careful because unsuccessful BIOS upgrades can completely damage your mobo..
