Extreme Coder
Hi, These are my PC specs: AMD Athlon 64 x2 4000 MSI K9AGM2 (with integrated X1200, but I dont use that) ATI Radeon X1650 Pro Audio is built in I want to install Leopard, but I have no idea which release would be best for me. There is kalyway, leo4all, zephyroth, and who knows what else.. So can someone please tell me which release should I use which would work best with my specs? Thanks. c_c
Well, Its going to be very difficult for anyone to say which will be best for you - unless someone with the exact hardware configuration has tried all three. It would be better if you looked around to see how people with similar hardware have got Leopard up and running. You can start with any one of the compilations as the base - just check that your SATA controller is supported by the disk. From there - you'll have to handle specific problems as they come up. Then again - you might not have many or any. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/110978-which-amd-release-to-use/#findComment-787862 Share on other sites

MiJKa
In all fairness, while I've never run across your exact set up, I've installed 10.5.2 on 4 or 5 different AMD setups. Thankfully, they belonged to friends, who didn't have a problem with me fiddling with their PCs all day long, so I got a chance to try out both Zephyroth and Leo4Allv.2 and v.3 (I've stopped using Kalyway. I know people swear up and down by it, but it's just not my personal favorite. Engh.) The short version of the answer is that Leo4All v.3 is both the easiest and most apt to work in the end with less problems. In. My. Experience. Which is to say this is not a general truth, just my experience with AMD OSX installations. GingerTea
MiJKA, actually only the crowds swear by Kalyway. Most of the gurus do not like it. Some people even say it's bad. For AMD we all know that Zephyroth & Leo4All are the best. ;-) After all, Leo4Allv3 is currently the best release for a wide range of AMD machines. Extreme Coder
I downloaded Kalyway, installed it, and I have GRUB, and when I boot it, I get Error Loading BooterX.Any ideas? Is this from a faulty installation? And it said about 6 hours to complete installation :/ Thanks for the info guys, I'm d/ling Leo4All now Oh, and I just want to ask another small question: If I install Leo4All v3, what would I have to do to get my GFX card working? Thanks! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/110978-which-amd-release-to-use/#findComment-788535 Share on other sites
Styxie
Both Kalyway and Leo4allv3 don't work on my AMD system. I can however boot iATKOS v1.0i, but afterwards I can't boot into Leopard. I'm gonna try Zephyroth 10.5.2 as soon as it's finished downloading, I'll post my results here. Is this from a faulty installation? And it said about 6 hours to complete installation :/ If OSx86 likes your hardware, it normally only takes 20-25 minutes or so to install. You've got a 690G motherboard? It's most likely lack of support for your chipset (the SB600). (I have a 690G myself and mine was definately NOT a normal install process - I have Zephyroth 10.5.1 and 10.5.2v1 working well on that computer, but I couldn't do it on the 690G computer itself - I had to use another computer, add the SB600_SATA_ATA .kexts, and move the install HD to the 690G machine... I've also NOT been successful updating that machine to 10.5.3 so far) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/110978-which-amd-release-to-use/#findComment-788805 Share on other sites

I'm 25% through downloading Leo4All v3 btw I hope I don't have to start and download another one.. (Zephyroth isn't seeded well at all :/ ) I've noticed from the .nfo that it has an SB chipset driver, is this the needed one?Hm, I looked around a bit, there is a PPF for SB600 support, should I apply that? Also, is getting "waiting for root device…" a sign that means it doesnt support SB600?And finally, will it take also 6 hours to complete installation? :(Thanks.. Extreme Coder
Alright, I tried Leo4All v3. My PC hangs at the message: USBF: *some number* AppleUSBOHCI[some hex number]::CheckSleepCapability - OHCI controller will be unloaded across sleep There is a PPF patch for Leo4All for SB600, should I try that? Extreme Coder
Turns out I had to leave the PC for a while, and then I got the dreaded Still waiting for root device. I will use SB600 patch and try again. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/110978-which-amd-release-to-use/#findComment-789720 Share on other sites
Extreme Coder
Another update.. I patched it with the SB600 patch, and it booted without the error, although I did see some messages while booting about ApplePCATA, is that a bad sign? Anyway, the installation process itself felt a bit faster than Kalyway, yet when I started installation, it sat about 15-20 minutes, "calculating remaining time", with only one error in the log, something about AutoFSMonitor. Then it what continued installing, it started saying about 15 hours left, and after another 20 minutes, it's now saying 9 hours left :/ I know it's an inaccurate timer, but is it supposed to take this long? Maybe it's not using the kext for SB600 chipset? But I don't see why it isnt, because it only worked with the patch... Also, when customizing, I chose VIA, SiS, Marvell and SB chipset driver, because it had SB600 in description. Am I on the right track or not? Someone, please help urgently! Extreme Coder
YET another update: I finally installed, I rebooted, and what do I get when my reboot? Still waiting for root device! Isn't the PPF I applied supposed to fix that/? Anyway, somebody please help urgently! Thanks.. cgsheen
Yup, the 690G is a PITA... The only way I got mine running was with Zephyroth 10.5.1 or Zephyroth 10.5.2 (version 1). I did the install ON ANOTHER COMPUTER (I actually used an external hard drive - once that basic install is done and the HD is bootable, the 690G WILL boot off the external drive (USB) - since it's USB it doesn't need the SB600 .kexts (yet)). If you use an internal drive (attached to another computer), you'll have to install the .kexts from "SB600_SATA_ATA.zip" (I use Kext Helper) before you attach the drive to the 690G... You can do the install from ANY AMD computer that will successfully run the Mac OS X Installer. (you can even make a disk image of that drive/install and restore it to a bootable partition in the 690G if you can get into the Disk Utility...) I can boot my Gigabyte GA-MA69GM S2H MB using Zephyroth 10.5.2 v1 (MBR EFI v_8, 9.2 kernel, SB600_SATA_ATA .kexts installed). Trying to update it to 10.5.3 fails - destroys the 10.5.2 install. If everything else has failed, you'll need another computer, or a friend with an AMD computer that will run the installer, a loose HD you can move from computer-to-computer, and a good deal of patience... Did you try the Leo4All V3 yourself? It doesn't work on its own(root device and all), but with the PPF patch, it can install easily, although the installation still takes too long. Yet, when I reboot after finishing installation, it gives the same root device error. I only have Linux on my PC, so I have no idea how to add the kexts needed.. Also, shouldn't the PPF patch handled that? Can I add the kexts inside the ISO? Should I try Zephyroth? The process you describe is quite a chore, and I don't think I want to do that everytime. I don't know any of my pals with AMD PCs :/ Thanks.. Extreme Coder
How much time and effort have you spent already trying "the easy way"? bummer... Quite a lot, I will admit. But I'm not sure having Leo on my PC is worth all that trouble. Even though I can't access a Mac, I do have access to a Windows PC, should I try using TransMac to insert the SB600 KEXTs you mentioned to a Leo4AllV3 iso? MacThomas
cgsheen, that's strange im using motherboard with 690G chipset, but i have no problems at all (gigabyte ga-ma69g-s3h). Every release works perfect - leo4allv3, zephyroth, kalyway. But i find kalyway dvd the best, the most stable release. I also updated leopard to 10.5.3 - no problems at all (used zephyroth's update tool).
