Installed the new JAS 10.5.3 update and finally go things working. As a completely subjective observation, 10.5.3 seems a bit snappier than 10.5.2, the apple boot screen loads faster and it seems like the desktop loads a bit faster as well. If you have and Aspire 5672 or similar system these tips should help you get started with the new update.

First off the installer updates ATINDRV.kext you'll want to back yours up before updating and replace it afterwords. If you don't replace it you'll get a black screen every time you boot. This should apply for anyone with a mobility x1600.

The JAS installer disables a few kexts and places them in /System/Library/Disabled Extensions/

If you want to get as close to vanilla as possible there are a few of these kexts that are safe to use (safe meaning they won't panic the kernel or trash your system, they still might have bugs or revert other patches. I'll update the post if I run into any issues down the line):

  • Any of the ATIRadeonx1000* kexts/plugins/bundles
  • IO80211Family.kext
  • IONDRVSupport.kext
  • IONetworkingFamily.kext
  • IOUSBFamily.kext

Be sure to make a backup just in case replacing these is a problem.

Ok I managed to get JAS 10.5.4 booting but it says there's no keyboard attached. This didn't happen with ToH. So I'll try that later again. I do have to add cpus=1 to JAS to get it to boot. I don't have to that when booting of the cd; I did have to do that with ToH though. Must be a kernel thingy?

Maybe you could make a tutorial for getting OSX to work on this laptop, Asstastic?

I put together a package of useful kexts and stuff for the Aspire 5672 laptops that you can download here: http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1603471_...startuppack.zip

Included in it is a hacked bios for the ASPIRE 5672 series laptops that permanently fixes the cpus=1 bug allowing you to boot OSX or Linux with full ACPI processor support. To get your keyboard working you'll need to install the PS2 fix included in many other releases, you might be able to install the fix driectly from the DVD without reinstalling 10.5.4.

A tutorial would be nice but with all the different DVDs floating around out there it'd be a pain to keep updating it to keep the pace with all the new releases.

Update:

Bios working; having two cores now in iAtkos.

Sound working.

First attempt at X1600 failed.

Network not working yet although it's being detected.

WHich distro do you recommend and with which kernel?

I'm still running a frankensten combination of releases that adds up to 10.5.3. I think I'm using the shutdown/reboot kernel as ATIinject breaks sleep support. Haven't actually booted into OSX in a couple of months after I stopped playing around in garageband and working in final cut.

Update:

I now have Kalyway 10.5.1 running with sound and ethernet working. X1600 still is a problem though...

Also Bluetooth and USB work fine.

Kalyway doesn't seem to detect that I'm running a laptop as I don't have the battery symbol; other releases do detect this and show battery power and also notice net cord power plugged in or not.

I can't get my X1600 working with the driver you sent me; I guess we have slightly different hardware.

Do you have a working battery meter with different power modes? And how about the card reader? Have you tested the PCCard slot too? The PCCard driver enables my LAN but does it work too with PCCard?

Update to 10.5.4 without any problems. Using vanilla kernel 9.4.0.

Still to fix:

- Sleep

- Speedstep

- X1600 with screen (maybe even brightness control for battery management?)

- WIFI

- Card reader

- Modem

- Touchpad with 2 finger scrollb

- Webcam

Hmmm messed up my install by trying to install a SMBIOS extension... Even -x didn't get me back to OSX.

Have to start over again. This time I'll try to have sleep and speedstep working first. I want to have maximum battery life in OSX.

Does anyone know how to check to see if speedstep is working?

Well the resolution switching doesn't work as expected; when I switch the screen turns light blue and the desktop doesn't show anymore... We need something like NVKush for ATI cards; that drivers works flawlessly on my P5W deluxe.

EDIT:

With the IONDRVSupport kext from Asstastic's package it does work! Only dual monitor doesn't work. Can live with that for now.

Have 10.5.5 working now. Had to use the Delta Update and remove IntelCPUManagement.

Speedstep works (partially) now. I have used SuperHai's kext for it. Auto Throttle works but I would like to have it automatically coupled to powermanagement; wishfull thinking I know!

Anyway the only show stopper now is sleep; I can get my 5672 into sleep it seems (sometimes the screen show some garbled version of the desktop for a short time) but I can't get it to wake properly. It seems sound works as the volume buttons sometimes give audible feedback but the screens stays black. Anyone have a working sleep on this laptop?
