PixelX86
Hi, is there a list of usb wireless adapters that work? I thought I'd seen one but can't find it now. The HCLs don't really seem to contain all the info that's dotted around in the forums. My optiplex 280's ethernet won't work, so I'd like to buy a wireless dongle for it, preferably a cheap one that works in windows and osx. Many thanks if anyone can point me in the right direction! PixelX86
OK, so maybe I was asking for a little too much there. Could anyone post if they are successfully using a USB wireless dongle and what it is? Also what version of OSX you're using, and if you had to patch anything to get it to work? thrunner
Why don't you do a search on "working wireless"? http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?ac...orking+wireless I think the three chipsets are Broadcom, Ralink and Atheros. You could start there. Not all chipsets by those are supported. PixelX86
Fortunately someone on the IRC helped me out. So in order to try and help others here who are finding it hard to follow the cryptic game of follow the link that has you bouncing from thread to wiki to thread to dead link... The aforementioned Ralink produce chipsets for manufacturers. One chipset that works (although not without bugs) is the "Ralink RT2500 chipset". After some digging I came across this page that lists actual products you can buy utilising this chipset, the bit you might actually care about... http://ralink.rapla.net/ One of the products is by Belkin and you can get it at Amazon UK from around £13... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...0963159-5071831 You can then use the driver from Ralink to get it working under OSX86 (look for Macintosh, 11g-RT2500, USB, 10.4)... http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm In theory this will let me get wireless connectivity via usb. The problems are that it isn't recognised as an Airport card and so runs it's own software, and requires being unplugged/plugged-in each time you restart. I'll post again when it turns up and let you know if it works out for me. I hope this will prove helpful to those who, like me, could do with some help minus the condescension. thrunner
could do with some help minus the condescension. There is none of that involved, except that all these have been answered many times at many threads in addition to the Wiki. A judicious search is advisable for anyone posting new threads. In any case if you are looking at the Ralink beware of problems by some, discussed here: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?s=...findpost&p=6744 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/10920-list-of-working-usb-wireless-adapters/#findComment-68853 Share on other sites
