Doktor Gummi
Hi, run up a Dell Precision 470 with a 10.5.1 install DVD. Dual 3.2 Xeons, 1GB ECC RAM, Nvidia 6800 PCi-E, 160Gb IDE drive. Leopard setup runs perfectly, pick all the options - all I had to do was mark the MBR boot as active with a boot floppy at the end of the process. ...but! No party. Machine boots, boot options show, tried using -v vanilla and it hammers all the way through to notification of the log directory: very briefly shows some kind of live vid signal at 1600 by 1200 (according to my screen mode-picker anyway...)... then it's dead. Hyperthreading is on. Power management is S3. Serial & Parallel ports off, SATA on plain SATA mode. BIOS rev is v7. Anyone got any release going on Leopard? I have a Precision 530 here too - is that an easier ride than the 470? I have a Quadro card here if that's more amenable than a 6800. ...The Doktor Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/108544-be-gentle-with-me-leopard-1051-on-dell-precision-470/ Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
Don't pick vanilla in the install options of the DVD. -v is verbose mode, not vanilla. Doktor Gummi
Thanks. I got the verbosity bit right and can't see any errors which lead to a particular diagnosis. I'm gonna dive into that updates list of startup switches and see if I get anything other than butkus... Synaesthesia
Just remember, don't use vanilla unless those are core 2 based xeons... Doktor Gummi
OK; some progress, and some weirdness 9always a good combination, that) Looks like the biggest hurdle was NVidia video. Removed XFX Geforce 6800GT: inserted ATI Radeon X800. Shazam! we have bootability! Took one self-triggered cold reset before it would give me the beachball, but in the end I got a seup and registration doodad and I now have a desktop. Weird thing: System Profiler reports THREE processors. Gets most of the rest of it right though; perhaps I'll junk hyperthreading next time I'm in the BIOS (which will be when i turn back on the ICH5 SATA thing and see if I can get into my old XP data) three minor snags - no audio, video is stuck strictly at 1024 by 768, and the network sez "cable is unplugged" no matter what. I've seen threads here abuot Dell audio so that should be cool; I guess there could be some others about the X800; and I had my suspicions about the chipset on this machine already. More when I've dived in there.. but from what I can see, a Precision 470 makes a very very fine OS X Machine...! Doktor Gummi
(sigh) Tried the Callisto patches to get the graphics card out of 1024 by 768: machine's back to not booting at all. Starts... waits a few seconds... cold shutdown. Should I be chasing a later install than 10.5.1 - or an earlier one out of the 10.4 code stream? I can't do P2P here without my ISP choking my bandwidth to hell, so other places to get downloaded would be helpful too... NuhkaX
I'm trying to get Leo installed on a Precision 470 also, but I keep getting a "Waiting for root device" Did you get this also? If so how did you get around it. I have a SATA drive in this thing also. Maybe I need an IDE........
