i'm just trying to set up a recording facility on my girlfriends G5 osx 2.6 and need help with interfaces in order to run logic express 7. To start with, are there no audio or digital interfaces already on the computer? Since everyone tells em mac is THE musical platform to use, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think there might be. Where would I look. There seems to be a version of garage band already on this machine. Does it have the audio and digital interfaces? Could I just plug in a keyboard ( yamaha p120 ) and the mic (oktava asm mk 319 ) into the computer, use garage bands interfaces, if they exist, and then transfer data into logic express 7 and work with it there? or do I need dedicated audio and digital interfaces, in which case I'd appreciate a thought or two on what to get.

I'm a musician rather than a computer literate mac user. My own computer is a PC and so I apologise for my ignorant Mac virginity - as the above questions might betray.

So I hope you'll be gentle with me and offer some help.

thanks in anticipation,

Colin

if I get you right, (the soundcard is an audio interface) you need to know if the g5 has a soundcard! since I don't have a g5, I don't know, but just like a pc if you have an output for speakers you should have one :P.

also there should be a small jack plug (called "line in", "input", "in","mic in" or smth similar)through which you can connect your keyboard or mic. of course you need the right cabels and adapters! that should be basically be found on every prebuild pc/mac!

I think you expect to have a semi professional or professional interface with multiple in and outputs etc., but here you will have to buy one and there are so many of them!

there are pci, pcie, firewire and (usb) cards to choose of!

good luck and take time to decide which one is best for you!

all macs have a generic stereo in/out interface that wil lwork within logic, though you'll probably want an external device, preferably firewire - for LE 7, any core audio supported interface will do fine (though i recommend upgraded to LE 8, 7 is EXTREMELY limited in what it can do)
