Hey everyone, so first I would like to say I admire all the amazing guides and stuff. I have run OS X x86 on two of my PC's before and I am ready to ditch my Mac desktop in favor of a more powerful appropriate "macintosh."

Since my usage requires heavy final cut, aperture, logic, creative suite, light-scribe dvd burning, dvr recording, and of course regular day-to-day Mac tasks... I have decided it is time to ditch my loaded to the maxx mac mini for something more appropriate.

But first i wanted to get an oppinion of everyone here on my specific hardware I am looking at. I have checked it and it seems to be OS X x86 compatible, according to the forums and wiki. But I would like so advice on prices and instillation "downloads" I should use. My mini is on ebay for 7 days starting today but I think i will keep my 20 inch display and not go 24 inch, for now.

2.4GHz Allendale C2D 775 processor **if there are cheaper core2quad's... that would be a dream, on my desk! cheapest I could find was $199 and thats a pretty big jump**

I plan to find a good condition PowerMac G5 case and loading it into that. I still need to find a Bluetooth card, wireless isn't necessary for my needs. I would like to find a firewire 800 card, but that isn't a necessity for the initial build, but it would be very nice.

Budget is $600, even though I think my loaded mac mini will sell for more... the less I spend the better. If anyone could also please tell me what I might have skipped over. I have never FULLY built my own PC before, only Macs from Mac parts, so this is a total new experience besides opening and fooling around with PC's around my house. I am pretty darn tech savvy, but again... little new territories.

THANK YOU ALL!

Have you thought about cooling? You might need to...

Note that LGA 755 slot doesn't mean too much, what you are after is the chipset. I research this for you...

EDIT: That motherboard has a 965P chipset, which is compatable with the C2D. But the 965P chipset is not compatable with the new Core 2 Quads take note..

thank you for clarifying that... so what sorta core 2 quad chip would i be looking for? that is os x x86 compatible also... I want to make sure either i get something that i can pop a quad into or I pop a quad in now.

thank you! :)

You should be looking for a P35 based Intel chipset on your motherboard. Try to avoid an Agere firewire chipset if you can, a number of audio interfaces hate that chip (I know because I have one). P35 is the latest chipset from Intel and supports the 1333 FSB quads and c2d's. The 965 only supports the 1066 FSB quads and c2d's. It's not a huge difference but in the long term you will have better upgrade potential with the P35 chipset. Also have you considered the E6550 Core 2 Duo? It's a nice upgrade from the 2.4ghz allendale (twice the cash and a 1333 FSB instead of 800 FSB). For power supplies I would recommend this one,

It's not the quietest but it works very well and has been rock solid for me (I have one in my main Hackintosh and have bought two for friends builds')

I think I am going to stick with the foxconn motherboard but skip to the Core 2 Quad. Is this a proper chip?

Also, would that nice cheaper power supply you recommended work with that chip?

thank you!!! :)

Dude this is all you need:Asrock Conroe945G-DVI Motherboard1/2/4 GB Memory40-350+ GB HDDAny DVD/RWAny C2D CPUI use this board and its almost perfect. Everything works but the sound and native video. Sound is easily fixed with AppleAzalia.kext, and the video you can pass the strings at boot or use the custom AppleIntelIntegratedFrambuffer.kext. When I installed it for the first time I replaced a bunch of kexts. Now I only replace 4 to 5.These are the kexts I replaced: AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleSMBIOS.kext. Here are the ones that I added AppleAzaliaAudio.kext, and dsmos.kext. Thats it the systems boots. And everything works until you upgrade to 10.5.2 where you need to remove AppleIntelCPUManagement.kext. You can make it 5 if you choose to use the custom AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext.

But for about $600+ you can get a used iMac and be hassel free too. Try here: http://www.applepalace.com . I'm so tempted to get the 2.0 G5 system.
