mlgower
I have a question regarding G4 PowerMacs. I have an opportunity to obtain a G4 and my choices are a 733Mhz Digital Audio Model or a 500Mhz dual processor model (unfortuatly, I don't know specific model numbers. They are similar in setup (ie ATI Radeon Video, 512MB Ram 60GB Drives) Drives are DOD wiped, so No OS, but I have Leopard (andcan get more ram). Which would be the best way to go? Do I want the faster processor or 2 of a slower speed. Thanks for the input! sarahbau
I had a dual 450, which is the same generation as the dual 500. It was a great machine, and was actually faster than my "faster" single processor G4s (my 867MHz PowerBook G4, 1.25GHz PowerBook G4, and 1.42GHz G4 mini). I'd personally get the dual. Viscaria
I don't think it is simple as just looking at the processor. A quick check of support.apple.com shows that the dual 500 is the top of the line Gigabit Ethernet G4 (half 2, 2000), and the 733 is the top of the line Digital Audio model (half 1, 2001). The Digital Audio had more video ram (32 default, up to 64 BTO as opposed to 16 default, 32 BTO). Also, the 733 uses faster PC133 RAM (as opposed to PC100), but only has 3 slots rather than 4, thus maxing out at only 1.5 GB. This may be more important if you are scavenging for RAM, as I would expect 512MB sticks of this aincient RAM to be harder to find than 256'es and you wouldn't want to be stuck below 1GB. Both should run Leopard, but are unsupported, so you will need to resort to some hackery to get it to install. This should be of some help: http://tinyapps.org/docs/install_and_optim...orted_macs.html Oh and not that is really matters, but the specific model numbers are probably M7893LL/A and M7681LL/A Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/103990-g4-question/#findComment-741022 Share on other sites
mlgower
Yea, I was wondering about all that too. I know the 733 has a faster bus, but then there's the ram to consider. I want the most bang for my buck. I know that they are upgradable to an extent so I guess what I need to know is which way is better? Do I sacrifice a little bus speed for extra ram capacity or just go with the faster processor and work from there? Maybe I should just get both of them..... Thanks for all the help!!
