twmsdude Posted April 29, 2008 Share Posted April 29, 2008 Hey folks. I have a really annoying problem right now. When I initially installed 10.4.8, i partitioned the drive to have 2 split partitions. The idea at the time was to dual boot xp/osx. Well I ended up liking the way osx was running, so i decided to scratch the idea of dual booting. At that time i already had all my stuff setup and was looking for a way to resize the drive. But due to the fdisk partition scheme that was used, this was impossible. So last night I backed my my entire partition to a disk image on a different partition. I got home from school today and popped in the kismus hackintosh tools dvd to do the following, this being my idea of it: 1. Erase main drive and make it 1 partition with the same drive label, "Mac OS X Tiger" 2. Mount the disk image and copy all the contents back to the main drive 3. Reboot and everything would be hunky dory. Well that didn't happen. I went into disk utility to restore from image, and it said it had to "scan for backup" or something. So i let it do it's thing, ended up taking too long for my patience, then clicking cancel. My hypothesis is that when I hit cancel in the middle of "reordering" it {censored}ed up my 88gb dmg file. This is a compressed file from the original 110gb's or so from the old main drive. I have tried to mount it in leopard, tiger, and the boot cd with no luck. I have also tried diskwarrior, and it just crashes upon me telling it to recover, great. I downloaded the demo of diskrescue 2 and it has not option to open from a disk image. Le Verdict: The disk image will NOT mount, even using the terminal command of hddutil. Disk image mounter.app says that the image is corrupted and cannot be mounted. Please help me recover this thing, or at least find a way to extract the contents. vaporATX Posted April 29, 2008 Share Posted April 29, 2008 Run Diskwarrior on the image and see if it can fix it. Note: Will take a long time, so don't get impatient and cancel it again. twmsdude Posted April 29, 2008 Author Share Posted April 29, 2008 Thanks for the reply vapor. I think i'll run it overnight and see if it works. The reason i'm canceling it is because it's crashing. I'll look up the error in console when I get home tonight. vaporATX Posted April 29, 2008 Share Posted April 29, 2008 Be sure to try Disk Warrior. It can work miracles and there is even a patch for it to make it compatible with hack Macs. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry718050 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/102123-recover-large-disk-image-that-is-corrupted/#findComment-728740 Share on other sites More sharing options...
twmsdude Posted April 29, 2008 Author Share Posted April 29, 2008 Hi vapor. I downloaded the patcher and it installed fine. I am however getting the same error in console. it's saying that the operation is not permitted. The application is still running as we speak. It is also coming up as "not responding" in activity manager. 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DiskWarriorRebuildServer: Error 1 executing '/usr/bin/hdiutil', 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] Initializing… 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 0, score [32m 100[0m, CBSDBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 1, score [31m -1000[0m, CBundleBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 2, score [31m -1000[0m, CRAMBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 3, score [32m 100[0m, CCarbonBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 4, score [31m -1000[0m, CDevBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 5, score [31m -1000[0m, CCURLBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 6, score [31m -1000[0m, CVectoredBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: selecting CBSDBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 0, score [32m 100[0m, CBSDBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 1, score [31m -1000[0m, CBundleBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 2, score [31m -1000[0m, CRAMBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 3, score [32m 100[0m, CCarbonBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 4, score [31m -1000[0m, CDevBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 5, score [31m -1000[0m, CCURLBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: interface 6, score [31m -1000[0m, CVectoredBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIBackingStoreInstantiatorProbe: selecting CBSDBackingStore 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIFileEncodingInstantiatorProbe: interface 0, score [31m -1000[0m, CMacBinaryEncoding 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIFileEncodingInstantiatorProbe: interface 1, score [31m -1000[0m, CAppleSingleEncoding 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIFileEncodingInstantiatorProbe: interface 2, score [31m -1000[0m, CEncryptedEncoding 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIFileEncodingInstantiatorProbe: nothing to select. 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIFileEncodingInstantiatorProbe: interface 0, score [32m 900[0m, CUDIFEncoding 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIFileEncodingInstantiatorProbe: selecting CUDIFEncoding 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIFileEncodingNewWithBackingStore: CUDIFEncodingDIFileEncodingNewWithBackingStore: instantiator returned 1 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] Attaching… 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] Error 1 (Operation not permitted). 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] Finishing… 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] hdiutil: attach failed - Operation not permitted 4/29/08 5:18:53 PM [0x0-0x1e01e].com.alsoft.diskwarrior[204] DIHLDiskImageAttach() returned 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/102123-recover-large-disk-image-that-is-corrupted/#findComment-729230 Share on other sites More sharing options...
twmsdude Posted April 29, 2008 Author Share Posted April 29, 2008 Here's what disk warrior is spitting out at me. The console is same as beforeI'm going to install tiger and try diskwarrior with the patch again. Be back in a couple hours. vaporATX Posted April 29, 2008 Share Posted April 29, 2008 I hate to say it but I'm guessing that .img file is fried or didn't get created properly in the first place. I suggest you test disk image creation in you new Leo install and see if it works. I've never tried diskutil to do that on any of my machines because I use SuperDuper for image creation. I'll give it a try later on my P4 tiger machine and see what happens. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. twmsdude Posted April 30, 2008 Author Share Posted April 30, 2008 Ok. I have tiger installed now, and diskwarrior is giving me the same error. Disk image mounter.app is now saying the reason it can't mount is because of a "broken pipe". twmsdude Posted April 30, 2008 Author Share Posted April 30, 2008 thanks for everything vapor. it looks like that image is bad for good. Too bad it had everything on it that i ever wanted to save. No backup...the goddamn dmg file was the backup! Sadly i have to start over. No pictures, music, programs, videos, documents, nada. Damn this really depresses me.
